Newtown Township Police Log: Copper Thieves Target Cell Tower

Monday, Feb. 28

At approximately 11:20 p.m., police responded to a noise complaint in the area of the Newtown Township Skate Park.  The officers observed a vehicle parked in the lot and two male subjects skateboarding.  The teens were instructed to leave the area because the park was closed.  Neither of the teens were residents of Newtown Township.

While patrolling the area of Pheasant Run around 10:15 a.m., an officer was waved down by an employee of one of the businesses.  The employee showed the officer a door at a loading dock that had been tampered with overnight.  No entry was gained and nothing was missing.  

At approximately 2:40 p.m. officers made contact with a group of juveniles loitering in the Village at Newtown South and instructed that they needed to leave the area.  The teens relocated to the front of the building next door.  The officers obtained the names of the teens and advised them that their parents would be contacted.  In speaking with the parents, the officer informed them that the teens received verbal warnings this time, but it the situation is repeated the juveniles will receive citations.

Wednesday, March 2

Police responded to a service station on Sycamore Street around 4:45 am for a report that a subject that had been dropped off and was getting into a vehicle in the parking area.  The responding officer located the man and determined that he was the owner of the car, and he was retrieving his vehicle that had been serviced.

Around 1:20 p.m., a motorist on Stoopville Road reported that a vehicle was parked near Rosefield with a “for sale” sign and the caller said it was causing a traffic hazard.  The responding officer determined that the car was not creating any problems with visibility. 

 A Yardley resident stopped at police headquarters around 1:30 p.m. to turn in an Apple iPod that he found in the parking lot of the Newtown Shopping Center on Monday, Feb. 28.  The individual explained that he noticed a name engraved on the back of the phone and attempted to make contact with the owner over the past two days, but was unsuccessful.  The item was turned over detectives, who will make further attempts to locate the owner.

At around 3:30 p.m., police received a report of an abandoned trailer parked across the street from Springhouse Road.  This responding officer found that the trailer and determined that the owner of the trailer was working on trees at a nearby residence. 

Thursday March 3

A resident of Connover Street in Newtown came to police headquarters to report that more than $2,400 of fraudulent purchases were made on her credit card.  The card was canceled and the credit card company will follow up on the investigation. 

Sunday March 6

Police responded to Linton Hill Road around 7:30 p.m. for a report of a disabled vehicle stuck in a large puddle.  The responding officer estimated that the water was about 20 inches deep and across both lanes of the roadway.  The driver of the vehicle had already called for a tow truck.  Public Works employees were dispatched to close the road with barriers.  Penns Park Road in Wrightstown Township also suffered flooding conditions.

Monday March 7

At approximately 11:40 a.m. police responded to the Verizon cell tower on South Eagle Road for a report of a theft of copper.  The Verizon employee told the officer that the cost to repair and replace the copper is estimated to be $1,200.  The employee also told the officer that there have been many similar thefts throughout Bucks County.
