Police Seek Witnesses to Durham Road Gun Incident

A man reported to police that a motorcyclist with a pistol approached his vehicle Sunday evening.

Police are looking for witnesses who may have seen a motorcyclist with an pistol approach a car stopped at the intersection of Durham Road and Second Street Pike in Wrightstown Township.

A Newtown Township man traveling south on Durham Road Sunday evening at around 6:45 was stopped at a traffic signal when one of two motorcycle riders that were behind him allegedly walked up to the driver’s-side of his car with a pistol in hand, police said.

The man with the gun only turned away and returned to his motorcycle after his riding partner began yelling at him, police said. The man driving the car told officers he was in shock after the incident.

Police report the suspected gun-wielding man as being approximately 40-years-old, heavyset with a scruffy beard, wearing a black leather vest and driving a black Harley-Davidson bike. The victim told officers he noticed nothing unique that would make the bike more identifiable.

After the incident, the Newtown resident turned into the Newtown Grant development. The bikers continued south on Durham Road, police said.

The victim went the police station to report the incident shortly after it occurred. He said he did not think to call 911 while the incident was happening.

If you have information that could help police or witnessed the incident call Detective Harris at 215-579-1000, ext. 398 or call the department’s anonymous crime tip number at 215-504-2201.

Tom, give us more information on this event. Was the man simply wearing a sidearm as allowed by law, was it in his hand, did he make threats? Merely wearing a holstered firearm while out and about isn't a crime. So why exactly are the police interested in finding this man? I ask because I am a firearms enthusist and am wondering if this is much ado about nothing or a real case of misconduct with a firearm. If this is a real situation I'm all for finding the guy, otherwise it's sour grapes from one of the sheep.

Eric - From what police said, it appears the man had the firearm in what the driver considered a threatening manner. I'll be following up with the police department tomorrow.

I think there is something fishy about this story. If someone had approached my car with a gun, and was then following me down the road, there is no way I would turn into Newtown Grant rather than into the police station which is directly across 413 from Newtown Grant. It sounds like the driver did something that angered the bikers. The first decided to show some force and the second had a cooler head, calling off the first.

The story says "pistol in hand". I would assume if it was pistol on hip it would have been indicated.
