A portion of the Newtown Bypass has been renamed in honor of a Newtown Borough police officer who lost his life in the line of duty.

During a ceremony Tuesday, the bypass, from its intersection with South State Street to its intersection with Durham Road, was officially renamed the Officer Gregg Memorial Bypass.

Brian Gregg, 46, was killed in the line of duty on Sept. 29, 2005.

Robert Flor, who was in custody for suspected drunken driving, was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital for testing. While there, Flor grabbed another policeman’s weapon and started shooting, wounding two others and killing Gregg.

Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick, who attended the bypass renaming event, also addressed the house floor Monday.

"Officer Gregg demonstrated his dedication to the Newtown community and its residents with his earnest and daily commitment to their protection," Fitzpatrick said in comments on the house floor.

I think it would have been MORE APPROPRIATE if they named a wing of the Hospital The Gregg Wing than a small part of a Highway no one will refer to as Gregg Highway.

I think it was great they did this, but wondering why no first name? Officer Brian Gregg Hwy?

Renaming a section of Washington Avenue or State Street would have been a more fitting honor for Officer Gregg. Even better, naming in honor of all fallen first responders past, present and future, with a plaque with their names would have been more comprehensive.
