Bank Robbery Attempt Ends in Arrest, Police Say

According to Newtown Township Police Department, John L. Butler was arrested after attempting to rob the TD Bank on West Road.

A man who attempted to rob the TD Bank in Newtown Township Thursday morning was arrested while still in the shopping center, Newtown Township Police said.

John L. Butler III has been arrested by Newtown Township police for the attempted bank robbery, which occurred at 8:30 a.m. at the TD Bank on West Road.

Butler's age is unlisted and his last known address is in Baltimore, Md., police said. However, he told police that he presently has no permanent address.

According to police, Butler presented a note to the teller that stated he had a weapon. Butler, however, did not have a weapon, police said.

A bank employee called 911 and provided a description of Butler, police said.

"With this information, uniformed patrol swiftly spotted the bandit still in the shopping center and took him into police custody," a press release from Newtown Township Police Department said. 

Butler was charged with robbery and arraigned Thursday before Judge Donald Nasshorn. He was sent to the Bucks County Correctional Facility in lieu of $500,000 bail, police said.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 6.
