Borough Council to Hold Work Session Tonight

The agenda includes discussion of waiving fees for the annual holiday parade.

The Newtown Borough Council will hold a work session meeting tonight at 7 p.m. at Council Chambers, 23 N State Street.

The agenda includes an update on the sinkhole at Penn and South State streets. Engineer Maryellen Saylor will provide the latest on a sinkhole that was located last month and is believed by borough officials to be a result of PECO’s electrical trench. In June, PECO performed an excavation of that portion of the street to determine if it was responsible for the sinkhole.

There will also be a discussion about waiving fees for the holiday parade. The parade is scheduled for December 4 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Last month, Borough Council reduced its special event application fee from $250 to $25 per day. The fee now covers the actual administrative costs associated with processing special event applications, which are required for parades, street fairs, 5Ks, etc, officials explained at the time.

Fees for police coverage associated with special events are $60 per hour per police officer.

However, organizers of Newtown’s holiday parade approached Borough Council last week seeking a waiver of fees. That discussion was deferred until this month’s meeting.
