Candidates For Borough Council To Hold Public Forum

The public forum is scheduled for Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Chancellor Center.

Candidates vying for three open seats on the Newtown Borough Council will come together for a public forum Monday, Oct. 10 at the Chancellor Center.

The forum will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be open to the public. It will also be recorded and scheduled for playback showings on cable.

Running on the Democratic ticket are incumbents Julia Woldorf, Mike Sellers and Gerard O'Malley.

Republican challengers are Bob King, Paul Salvatore and Larry Auerweck.

O’Malley serves as the co-chair of the borough's Budget and Finance Committee, and is a founding member of the Newtown Borough Traffic Committee and the Joint Newtown Borough and Township Traffic Committee.

O’Malley faces Salvatore for the single open seat in Ward 1, which consists of the portion of the borough north of Washington Avenue, as well as a section of Congress, Centre, and Court streets south of Washington Avenue.

Salvatore, a long-time resident who has served on several community boards and commissions, is the vice chair of the borough’s Planning Commission and a past president of the Newtown Business and Professional Association.

In Ward Two, Sellers and Woldorf face challengers Auerweck and King. Ward Two includes most of the borough south of Washington Avenue.

Woldorf, the current council president, serves as liaison to the Joint Historic Commission and the Environmental Advisory Council. She is a 34-year resident of the borough.

Sellers, an attorney, is the liaison to the Newtown Borough Planning Commission and Zoning Office, and is a founding member of the Newtown Creek Coalition.

Auerweck is a retired educator who has said he’s concerned about fiscal prudence.  King is a former Council member who was defeated in 2007.
