Long Lines to Vote in Newtown

Voting lines as long as an hour line have been reported at polling places in Newtown.

When the polls opened at 7 a.m. at Goodnoe Elementary in Newtown Township, a line as long as an hour formed, residents reported. At 9:30 a.m., the line had shrunk to a 20 minute wait. There were no parking places and voters were using makeshift spots on the lawn.

At the Newtown Fire Station, there was no wait to vote around 9:30 a.m. but poll workers said there was a line earlier in the morning.

"We had a line and we never have a line," poll worker Liz Warren said.

Poll worker Paul Salvatore, who was also at the fire station polling place, said the line was 40 people deep earlier in the morning. "For us to have 40 people, that's a lot," he said. 

At the Newtown Township Municipal Building polling place, the lines first thing in the morning were more than an hour, voters reported. By 10 a.m., the lines had shortened but not by much, said township Supervisor Rob Ciervo, who was outside the polling location. "It really hasn't slowed down at all," he said, adding the turnout is similiar to other past presidential elections.

At Anchor Run Presbyterian Church in Wrightstown Township, the wait was more than a half hour long shortly after 10 a.m.
