McDonald's Files Application For Restaurant In Newtown Township

McDonald's is seeking to open a 58-seat restaurant with a drive-through window on the site of Office Place East, a building adjacent to Wachovia Bank.

McDonald’s has submitted an application to Newtown Township for a 3,911 square-foot fast food restaurant in the Village of Newtown East Shopping Center.

According to the plans, which are available for public viewing at the Newtown Township Administration Building, McDonald’s is seeking to open a 58-seat restaurant with a drive-through window on the site of Office Place East, a building adjacent to Wells Fargo.

The plans call for the restaurant to have 41 dedicated parking spaces, which is the requirement by township zoning laws. The number is based on a formula of one spot per two seats plus one per employee.

The plans also call for an entrance and exit to be constructed off Durham Road.

Newtown Township Manager Joe Czajkowski said the plans will be forwarded to various township consultants, including the engineer, planner and zoning officials for review.

“Once they have reviewed the plan, it will be scheduled for review by the Planning Commission,” Czajkowski said. He noted there is presently no set date for the plans to be on the Planning Commission agenda.

Many local residents are aware of McDonald’s intent to construct a location in Newtown. Last winter, opponents created a Facebook page, “Say No To McDonald’s At Village Of Newtown East,” which now has 244 “likes.”

More than 50 people attended an informal presentation by McDonald’s representatives that was given at a Board of Supervisors meeting in March. The majority of the public comment during the meeting was in opposition to the proposal due to the resulting traffic, parking issues, noise, and trash in the area.
