New Trailer Parks Require More Land Under Approved Ordinance

The Newtown Township Board of Supervisors on Wednesday approved an ordinance that increases the required acreage for a mobile home park from 15 to 25 acres.

The Newtown Township Board of Supervisors on Wednesday approved an ordinance that increases the required acreage for a mobile home park from 15 to 25 acres.

The ordinance won't have an impact on a pending proposal for a trailer park at the Newtown Swim Club, which will likely be replaced with a townhome plan.

The motivation behind the ordinance “is to not have to face the threat of a mobile home park again,” Newtown Township Board of Supervisors Chairman Mike Gallagher said at a previous meeting.

Earlier in the meeting Wednesday, the supervisors voted to support conditions put forth by the developer in order to resubmit a townhome plan on the 16.5 acre site.

County Builders in December submitted an application for a 56-pad trailer park on the Newtown Swim Club site.  Newtown Swim Club owner David Platt is working with the builder to create a residential development on the property on Newtown-Yardley Road once it closes after this summer.

The plan for the trailer park was submitted after the builder didn't receive support from the township on a previous townhome plan, which required a variance because it exceeded the number of units allowed on the site.

However, neighbors reacted with concern once they learned of the mobile home plan and urged the town to work with the builder on an alternate proposal.

Wednesday's vote was the outcome of discussions with the builder, in which a series of conditions were established as a prerequisite to submitting another plan.
