Philadelphia One of 6 Finalists for DNC Host

The winning city will not be announced until next year.

Philadelphia, one of 15 cities to submit bids to host the 2016 Democratic National Convention, has been selected one of six finalists.

Also in the running are Birmingham, Cleveland, Columbus, New York and Phoenix, Politco said.

Pittsburgh was one of the initial cities to submit a host bid, but dropped out to give Philadelphia a better chance, the Pittsburgh Business Times reported

Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell is chairing a nonprofit group that will try to raise $50 million to host the convention at the city's Wells Fargo Center.

Philadelphia, a historically Democratic city, has not hosted a Democratic National Convention since 1948, Philadelphia Magazine said. The city hosted the Republican National Convention in 2000.

The winning city will not be announced until next year.
