When Will Veterans Park Fields Finally Open?

Newtown Township Manager Kurt Ferguson said he expects the fields at Veterans Park will be ready to use in the fall.

When will the Veterans Park fields finally be ready for play?

That’s the question Newtown resident Mark Joseph asked the Board of Supervisors Wednesday. But he’s probably not the only one in town who wants to know.

The park was officially dedicated in May 2011 but because of problems with the quality of the grass, the fields have only been utilized on a limited basis. The park, located off Durham Road across the street from Clark Nature Center, has six ball fields.

Township Manager Kurt Ferguson said he expects the fields will be ready to use in the fall. A contract approved in March with Superior Turf is intended to get the fields ready for play, he added.

The township and the park’s contractor, Adams-Bickel Associates, are currently in litigation over the $2.4 million contract for the park.

Ferguson said he meets and speaks with Superior Turf representatives regularly. Superior Turf has given “no indication” that the fields will not be ready by the fall, Ferguson said.

Council Rock Newtown Athletic Association used the fields at Veterans Park on a limited basis last spring, but it came with a $7,000 price tag. That’s the amount the CRNAA had to pay to build mounds and prepare the fields for play.
