Talk about over-reaction! The "estimate" is $800K but we know how government estimates work. So let's just double that to $1.6M. Plus it include new personnel - which are not just paid in 1 year - they add to the cost every year thereafter. So this estimate is just plain and simple B.S. I don't think they should do any of this. It's turning our schools into prisons. It's too bad Mr. Klein has fallen prey to the over-reactionary attitudes in this county, likely prodded on by a few freaked-out parents.

Are these security people going to be armed? If they aren't then what is the point?

So let me get this straight, I need a criminal background check to pick up my kid? This is ridiculous! Whether you like it or not, PUBLIC schools have a duty to educate ALL children. Will children be punished for their parents sins? Even the federal government is backing off... "A federal agency has issued a directive claiming that federal contractors who perform criminal background checks may violate the Civil Rights Act of 1964, because “racial and ethnic minorities are arrested and convicted at a higher rate than whites.” The Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) has issued Directive 306, which states that contractors who conduct background checks and exclude job seekers “based upon their criminal history may be discriminatory.”" from http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/feb/21/feds-say-employee-background-checks-are-racist/?fdgd Can't wait to see the first lawsuit CR faces over this "security theater".

Yes - security theater is exactly what this is. Children are VERY often outside of the school building at recess and participating in sports. So we spend tons of cash to plug up one entry point, significantly inconveniencing EVERYONE in the process. And it will not prevent a shooting if someone has set their mind to it. If a shooter wants to gain entry through a side door he can just shoot his way in through it. After this is implemented what happens after the next shooting in America. Everyone over-reacts AGAIN and we spend more and more money until we've barricaded our children in impregnable bunkers, with no recess or sports (because that's just not safe anymore). You can't keep everyone 100% safe at all times - it is IMPOSSIBLE. We all need to accept that we live our lives with risk and hope for the best. Yes - it sounds cruel and a bit weak but that's reality. And reality bites.
