BCCC Event to Raise Money for Japanese Tsunami Victims

As part of its Arts at Bucks celebrations, is presenting a special program to raise money for the victims of last year’s earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

The program, “Remembering Japan: March 11, 2011,” will be held April 18 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Newtown campus. The public is invited to attend this free event.

The program will begin at 1 p.m. with a screening of a PBS-NOVA documentary about Japan’s killer quake. The hour-long film will be screened in the Fireside Lounge, located in the lower level of the Rollins Center. 

Here's an exerpt from the film description: “In its worst crisis since World War II, Japan faces disaster on an epic scale: a death toll likely in the tens of thousands, massive destruction of homes and businesses, shortages of water and power, and the specter of nuclear meltdown. With exclusive footage, NOVA captures the unfolding human drama and offers a clear-headed investigation of what triggered the earthquake, tsunami, and subsequent nuclear crisis. Can science and technology ever prevent devastation in the face of overwhelmingly powerful forces of nature?”

The documentary screening will be followed by demonstrations of Japanese music, art and crafts from 2:15 to 4 p.m. in the Gallagher Room, located on the upper level of Rollins. Winners of a haiku poetry contest run by Professor Christopher Bursk will be announced. Japanese crafts, including origami, will be sold to raise funds for the Red Cross for the Japanese tsunami victims.
