BCCC Students To Present Academic Work at Research Conference

Friday's seminar is modeled after those conducted by graduate students and research scholars.

Bucks County Community College will hold its biannual Student Research Conference from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the Newtown campus. The event will give more than 100 students from several academic departments the chance to present their semester-long research in the same manner of graduate students and research scholars.

“Bucks has long recognized that interdisciplinary activity is very important,” said Dean of Academic and Curricular Services Catherine McElroy. “We were one of the first schools to pioneer a ‘writing across the curriculum’ program and this is the natural extension and evolution of that program.”

The conference, sponsored by the Department of Language and Literature, includes students from four academic departments – Language and Literature, Social and Behavioral Science, Arts, and Business Studies.

“The conference is designed to put into action the claims Bucks instructors make in the classroom: that research and writing are skills that are crucial to our students’ success in their academic, business, and personal lives,” said Assistant Professor Dr. Jenn Diamond.

The event is structured like a professional research conference. After brief keynote addresses, participants break out into panels, meeting in classrooms across campus. Presenters will each offer a five-minute overview of their findings, and then discuss those findings with one another and conference attendees.

The conference is aimed at providing students with an opportunity to participate fully in the scholarly community.  The event, which is centered in the Gateway Center Atrium on the campus at 275 Swamp Rd., Newtown, Pa., is free and open to the public.
