School Board to Clarify Policy to Ban Guns at Meetings

“For the last year, I have felt unsafe sitting at this dais,” Council Rock School Board member Bernadette Heenan said Thursday.

The Council Rock School Board will review district policy to include language that restricts anyone from bringing a gun to the Chancellor Center, where the board meetings are held.

Guns are already prohibited at district schools. However, some board members said they felt it should be clear that firearms are also not permitted at the Chancellor Center, a district-owned property. In addition to being the site of the meetings, the Chancellor Center is home to district administrative offices.

“For the last year, I have felt unsafe sitting at this dais,” board member Bernadette Heenan said. She initially asked that the board meetings be transferred to a school building so as to ensure no firearms would be present.

“I will not come back to another board meeting unless the venue is changed immediately,” Heenan said. She added the measure is needed to protect the welfare of the students who often attend the board meetings.

Following Heenan’s comments, the board took an executive session, which is closed to the public, to discuss matters of litigation regarding the issue. When the meeting resumed, the board agreed unanimously to direct its solicitor to craft language that clarifies district policy on meetings to make it clear that no guns are permitted on the Chancellor Center property.

The policy will be reviewed at the next board meeting, scheduled for Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m.

This issue needs NOW much more media investigation and much more disclosure. What is be being said in public is not the whole story and this is NOT REALLY being dealt with. VERY disturbing past and present, but my opinions too much for this so please see link ... http://www.truetoall.com/GUNS.pdf

the VOICE ... No idea why you are blasting a woman who feels unsafe with an unnecessary gun in the room — and I can't understand what you have against school directors. And what is SO good about someone like Bernadette that cares so being unable to attend meetings and feel safe? I don't and I did not go to the last one which means a gun limited MY VOICE. Have you been to school board meetings? DO you even understand all they have to deal with for NO PAY? DO you get they are far more then educational board as they are responsible for the biggest part of your tax bill and they are land owners and they have to spend so much time on building upkeep and they have to deal with state unfunded mandates and they have to deal with (I believe) 5 different townships and they have to deal with the safety of all the children and they have SO much else to do. In another blog you say "your little school district Job that you can't handle". Before throwing stones you MIGHT want to understand what Bernadette and the rest of them do right or wrong is no "LITTLE SCHOOL DISTRICT JOB".
