Community College Holds Sex Education Event

Bucks County Community College held a sexual education event Monday that featured games and discussions.

Bucks County Community College held a sexual education event Monday to teach students about sexually transmitted diseases and infections, as well as various contraceptives.

Scattered brochures and a basket of free condoms compelled students to enter the event, which was held in the lunch room. The free sodas and pizza helped, too.

Alison Bellavance hosted the event with the help of Bucks' Open Door Club. Bellavance hosted four separate workshops throughout the day that educated students about relationships, communication, and sexually transmitted diseases.

Bellavance said the purpose of the event was to educate students about safe sex, particularly those who have never taken a sex education course. This was a shorter version of "sex week," which is hosted at Rutgers University every year.

After students ate snacks and asked questions, about ten people gathered around a cardboard jeopardy board. The categories consisted of HIV/AIDS, STI's, birth control/contraceptives, LGBT, anatomy, and safer sex/condoms.

The students were eager to answer questions and many said they learned alot from the exercise.

“It was a good time," student Bridget Noble said. "We learned a lot and there were free condoms.”

“The questions were kind of hard, but it didn’t matter if we got something wrong because in the end, we got something out of it," Dominique Wagner said, adding that sex education is an important topic to address. “It is something kids need to know these days, and oftentimes don’t.”

Even teachers learned from the event. Sociology teacher Max Probst said the jeopardy game taught him something -- that the most frequent time for Americans to have sex is at 10:30 at night.

After a day of educational activities, participants were given a survey regarding the relevance of the content and what students would like to learn about in the future. The survey will help determine if more events similiar to this one should be held at Bucks in the future.
