Council Rock Schools Closed Today Due to Rain

A two-hour delay has been extended and all Council Rock schools will be closed today.

Due to excessive rain and flooding, all Council Rock Schools are closed today, Sept. 8.

Heavy rain that fell overnight initially created flash floods on roads and prompted officials to issue a two-hour delay, which later was extended to an all-day closure.

"I recognize that his was a hectic morning for parents and students in our community.  We were working with our townships to assess roads and creek conditions since 4:30 a.m. this morning," Superintendent Mark Klein said in an email.

"Beginning at 6:45 a.m., the Neshaminy Creek began to crest and flood area bridges.  Bridges on Buck Road and Second Street Pike were closed early in the morning," Klein said.

By 7:30 a.m., the bridge at Newtown-Richboro Road was in the process of being closed as the Neshaminy crested in Tyler Park, Klein added.  "These closures made it impossible for Council Rock to move busses from terminals in Wrightstown and Newtown," he said.

"We were not prepared for the volume of water that fell last night and the impact of saturated grounds and swollen water ways.  There was simply no safe way to run busses to and from schools this morning.   I apologize for the sequence of delay and closing this morning," Klein said in the email.

Back to School Night at Council Rock High School North has been postponed to a date to be selected.
