CR Board Member Calls for Teacher Ban on YouTube and Facebook

The issue was raised after an incident in which a Holland Middle School student obtained access to a teacher's computer to show an obscene video on YouTube.

 

One Council Rock School Board member wants to ban teacher access to Facebook and YouTube in all district schools.

Patty Sexton said YouTube and Facebook should not be accessible from any computer at any school. Students are already not able to access the sites thanks to the district’s filtering software.

She expressed the concern at a board meeting Thursday, after an incident in which a Holland Middle School student obtained access to a teacher’s computer to show an obscene video on YouTube.

However, Klein said a teacher ban on the sites wouldn’t be beneficial for the district.

“YouTube as an instructional tool is extremely valuable,” Klein said. “You can’t begin to create policy based on one incident.”

Board member Jerold Grupp said a site-by-site prohibition would not be effective, as the internet changes every day. He said instead, the district should focus on ensuring students can’t obtain access to faculty computers.
