New School Year Begins With Charitable Events, Fall Celebrations

At the start of each month, Newtown Patch will take a look back at Council Rock community happenings and also give a sneak peek into what's coming up on the calendar.

Goodnoe Elementary School

Goodnoe Elementary School 6th graders held a fundraising car wash on Sept. 17.  Sixth graders, led by PTO volunteers Stacie Mishler and Mary Stranford, worked hard all day to earn $677.  The proceeds will go to offset the costs of sixth-grade activities this year, including dances, trips and special activities.

For the first time ever, Goodnoe will be holding a science fair for fifth- and sixth-grade students.  Families and friends are invited to attend the Science Fair on Thursday, Oct. 13 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Goodnoe Elementary gym.  Refreshments will be served.

Goodnoe staff will be holding their annual Technology Tour Open House on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. in the library.  The hour-long presentation will provide Goodnoe community members with an opportunity to watch students and staff demonstrate various kinds of technology used on a daily basis in classrooms.

Students at NES have been hard at work collecting supplies and extras for the troops in the 10th Mountain Division stationed in Afghanistan.  NES teacher Stephen Downs said families have gone above and beyond what was expected and have donated generously.  From Tastykakes to DVDs to iTunes gift cards, the eight cases of goodies will be boxed and shipped in early October.

Newtown Elementary School will be hosting a Halloween-themed tailgate party on Oct. 28 at 6 p.m.  "Trunk or treat" is a family-friendly party that will take place in the Newtown Elementary school parking lot.  Trunks will be popped open, costumes will be adorned and treats will be handed out.

Wrightstown Elementary School

The second annual WES Fall Festival will be held on Saturday, October 15, from 11 - 3 p.m.  There will be food, games, a petting zoo, inflatables, decorated jars to purchase, a fish pond, lollipop trees, basketball hoop shots, tattoos, cake walks and other activities for children of all ages.  Every student who comes to the festival will leave with something, organizers said. Principal Sue Gormley said this event generates much excitement and is a great way to start the school year.

Newtown Middle School

Newtown Middle School teachers and students will participate in a school walk to benefit diabetes on Oct. 21.  The school has set the goal of raising $1,000.00.  Click here support a specific Newtown Middle School student or to support the school.

The Newtown Middle School Student Council has announced that the first school dance of the year will be a Halloween dance held on Friday, Oct. 29 from 7 to 9:30 p.m.  Students must present their student identification to get into the dance.

In other news, Council Rock Education Foundation (CREF) has partnered with TD Bank for the Affinity Program, a program that allows for new or existing customers of TD Bank to support CREF.  TD Bank will make a donation to CREF based on a percentage of the balances of all linked accounts.  This program costs the customer nothing and provides significant dollars to support the school district, officials said.  In 2011, CREF received over $6,800 from this program.  If you are interested, contact the local TD Bank branch.
