Richboro Middle Parents Launch Effort to Prevent School Closing

Schools suggested for closure by Council Rock's Capital Planning Committee include Wrightstown Elementary School, Richboro Middle and Rolling Hills Elementary.

Residents throughout Council Rock are taking action now to express their dislike for a series of proposals by a district Capital Planning Committee that include closing schools.

The Capital Planning Committee presented three separate proposals to the board last month. All of the proposals suggest that closing schools is a fiscally necessary next step. Schools suggested for closure include Wrightstown Elementary School, Richboro Middle and Rolling Hills Elementary.

At a meeting last week, Council Rock School Board members stressed that discussions were in the early stages and no decisions have been made.

However, residents are already getting geared up for a fight.

Wrightstown residents have been vocal with their aversion to the proposal to close the only school in that township. An online petition that supports keeping the school open has more than 965 signatures as of Tuesday.

Families in the Richboro Middle School area are also getting active in their effort to stop that school from being closed. They have also created an online petition, that as of Tuesday has more than 220 signatures

In addition, Wrightstown Elementary School supporters have created a Facebook page, Save Wrightstown Elementary School.

Council Rock’s Capital Planning Committee, comprised of volunteers from across the district, was tasked with coming up with a capital plan by assessing buildings and overall student enrollment.

The next discussion regarding the proposals is expected to take place at a board meeting in September.
