Rock Roundup: Empty Bowls, Guys Night, and More

Each month, Newtown Patch will take a look back at Council Rock community happenings and give a sneak peek into what's coming up on the calendar.

Goodnoe Elementary

On Saturday, April 2, the Goodnoe Elementary PTO partnered with the Artist in Residence program for an Empty Bowls dinner event. All proceeds benefited the Penndel Food Bank.  During art class, students sculpted bowls out of clay to be used for the Empty Bowls Dinner.  The lesson was led by Goodnoe art teacher Nancy Napoli and local sculptor Terri Herring.

Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger with the basic premise that guests are invited to a simple meal (in this case macaroni and cheese) in exchange for a cash donation. Guests are asked to keep the bowls as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world.  Goodnoe PTO president Diana Bilyk reported that the PTO raised over $2,400 for the Penndel Food Bank.

Newtown Middle School

On Friday, May 6, Newtown Middle School will have their second annual “Guys Night Out,” an event for 7th and 8th grade boys.  The objective of this evening is for students to foster connections with fathers, mentors, peers and teachers. Not only will the students have a memorable evening interacting with their peers, but organizers hope the boys will gain lessons on how to responsible and accountable for their actions.  The night will include an outdoor obstacle course, flag football, a homerun derby, Minute to Win It games, a brief discussion, and a cookout.  A minimal donation of $5 is requested. All proceeds will be donated to a local charity.

Sol Feinstone Elementary

The Sol Feinstone PTO organization is currently collecting money for The Miracle League of Northampton.  The Miracle League is dedicated to building an athletic program and sports complex that meet the unique, special needs of the Miracle League players in the Bucks County area.  While shopping at Hootie's Hut, the Sol Feinstone school store, children are encouraged to drop their spare change into the collection jar for this worthy cause.

FYI- The second annual Council Rock Elementary Media Festival will be held on Wednesday, May 18, at Newtown Middle School.  The event begins at 6:45 p.m. with a participant recognition reception, followed by the awards ceremony at 7:15. The creative work of Council Rock teachers as well as students will be featured.

The Rock Roundup column will be a regular monthly feature on Newtown Patch.  Please contact Nicole Buten at dbuten1@verizon.net if you have a school event you would like to see featured.
