Shaving Cream for Soldiers, Arbor Day Activities and More

The third annual CRSD Elementary Media Festival will be held at on May 16, beginning with participant recognition at 6:30 p.m. An awards ceremony begins at 7 p.m.  Families from around the district are invited to view and experience the creative work of Council Rock teachers and students. 

On Wednesday, May 23 (rain date May 24), the Council Rock School District will conduct the annual Elementary Field Day for all sixth grade students at the football stadium. This Council Rock community event, which runs from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m., will provide sixth graders with the opportunity to showcase their skills in dash runs, relay races, hurdles and tug of war.  Ribbons will be awarded to the top three individuals and/or teams for each race.

Students from these three schools have partnered up to provide a valuable service to the soldiers in Afghanistan.  Students are collecting and donating shaving cream to help the soldiers.  The shaving cream is not for the soldiers to use on their faces, though.  The shaving cream is used to mark roadside bombs and mines and provide a clear path for safety.  Eventually the cream evaporates, so no evidence is left of a military presence in the area.  The students from the Sloan School will package and mail the shaving cream to the soldiers. 

Students from the Theodore A. Sloan School have been very busy with community service projects.  The students have been working with the Focus Ministry Food Cupboard in Southampton, an emergency food pantry that provides food and supplies to community members in need.  Students conduct bi-monthly shopping trips at Costco to collect supplies that are needed at the Food Cupboard.  Money for the food and supplies is donated anonymously by a benefactor from the community. Once the students are done shopping, they load a van and deliver the food and supplies to Southampton.  Sloan School teacher Josie Helmuth said that Sloan students will continue with this partnership as long as there is a need and they have the generosity of the benefactor. 

Also, in celebration of Arbor Day, students from The Sloan School planted a tree at the Chancellor Center.

Earlier this month, Council Rock South students hosted a lemonade stand to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.  If you'd like to help out, donations can also be made online here.  CR South has a goal of raising $2,000 to support the cause. 

Eighth-grade students will have the opportunity to experience Argentinean music by Justo Lamas during a 90-minute concert at Newtown Middle School on May 17.  The Justo Lamas group brings its program to thousands of schools each year, with a primary mission to teach the Spanish language, as well as reinforce positive values. 

The CES PTO would like to invite students to a special boys' night out event to be held Thursday, May 31 at 7:05 p.m.  Tickets are on sale to attend a Trenton Thunder baseball game at Waterfront Park, with a fireworks show to follow the game.  Information for tickets can be obtained by emailing Terri Purdy at terripurdy@hotmail.com.
