Schools

Rapunzel, Rock Madness, Reading Olympics and More

At the beginning of each month, Patch explores Council Rock School District happenings.

Newtown Middle School

The community is currently collecting hair to donate to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths organization. Beautiful Lengths is a partnership between Pantene and the American Cancer Society that donates thousands of free, real-hair wigs to women living with cancer.  So far, the school has collected 69 inches of hair through the project, called “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, Let’s Grow Your Hair."

The school will be collecting hair for the remainder of the school year. If you are willing to cut at least eight inches of your hair, contact either Mrs. Crognale at acrognale@crsd.org or Mr. Lebofsky at blebofsky@crsd.org for a donation form. Bring the donation form to your own stylist, have them bag the hair and drop it off in the front office at the school. (Include your name and address so that a thank you note can be sent.) At the end of the school year, the NMS community will determine how many feet of hair Newtown Middle School will be able to donate to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths organization. Please consider donating to this very worthy cause!

Newtown Middle School’s CRAFT (Council Rock Arts for Teens) Players will be putting on their annual show March 9 and 10. The show, called “12’s Kaleidoscope Kabaret," will be a variety show showcasing the talents of 75 Newtown Middle School students who make up the cast, along with 20 students in the pit orchestra and eight in the stage/lighting crew.  Mr. Dolan, music teacher and director of the show, said the songs from the show this year all have a reference to color, whether in the lyrics, song title or show concept. (Hence the name Kaleidoscope Kabaret.) The shows are scheduled for March 9, at 7:30 p.m. and March 10 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 a seat. Contact Sandy Hoffenson at shoffenson@crsd.org for tickets.

Council Rock South

Council Rock South is sponsoring a College Fair on March 8 in the gymnasium. The fair runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Representatives from approximately 120 colleges will be there to offer information and answer questions.

The Bucks County Elementary Reading Olympics is scheduled for March 29 at Council Rock High School South. This celebration of reading will begin at 6 p.m. for all fifth-and sixth-grade students. Students have been working with their teams and discussing the books in order to prepare for the olympics. Teachers told us the Reading Olympics provides an opportunity for students to read more, read a greater variety of books and enjoy being a part of a book discussion.

Richboro Elementary School

Richboro’s biggest fundraiser of the year, the Bulldog Bash, is coming up on March 10 from 11:00-3:00. The day includes games, activities, food and raffle baskets. The money raised from the bash supports various Richboro School Association initiatives, such as Smart Boards, playground upgrades, author visits and the science fair.

Council Rock students and staff are in the process of forming basketball teams for Rock Madness. Students in grades five through eight and staff are invited to form teams and compete in a three vs. three half court basketball tournament. Two teams will advance from each elementary building and two middle school teams will advance from each school.  Finals are scheduled for April 13 at Council Rock South. The registration fee of $10 per player will benefit the newly-formed Council Rock Sports Foundation. Come join the fun and cheer on Council Rock’s twist on the college basketball March Madness tournament.

The month of March means statewide testing is here. The Pennsylvania System of School Assessment PSSA) exams will be administered in Council Rock schools for students in grades three through eight and eleventh, throughout March. Time and valuable resources go into ensuring students are prepared for the PSSA’s. In order to make certain students do well on the exam make sure students get a good night’s sleep the night before, eat a healthy breakfast on the days of testing, relax, read all directions carefully, and recheck all answers.
