The issue of ninth-grade sports will be discussed tonight at the Council Rock School Board meeting. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at the

Council Rock School District cut its ninth-grade sports program for the upcoming school year due to budgetary reasons, however, the administration announced last month that it was working on alternatives for freshman athletics.

Superintendent Mark Klein in July recommended the district allocate $10,000 to set up athletic programs at Council Rock North and South high schools that would take the place of competitive ninth-grade sports.

However, last month Klein said he didn’t have the specifics on the program and wanted to meet with staff and parents to discuss it. But he did say he envisioned an intramural program that taps into the existing community youth sports leagues.

Tonight, the board expected to hear more details about that proposal.

During the budget process, the board elected to eliminate the ninth-grade sports program, which costs approximately $115,000 per year to operate. In addition to financial concerns, Klein said in the future, freshman teams may have trouble finding opponents because many area districts are eliminating ninth grade sports.

The agenda includes the following additional items:

  • Discussion of concussion screening, a new program in the high schools this fall.
  • A first reading of revisions to a board policy on acceptable uses of computers.
  • Approval of a new letter of credit. The administration is requesting the approval of a resolution for a New Letter of Credit for 2004 Series A and C Bond Issues as contained in the Attachments to this Agenda. This change was briefed to the Finance Committee during the July 28 meeting.
  • Approval of agreement with Pennsylvania School Education Association. The Human Resources Department is requesting approval of an agreement between Council Rock and Pennsylvania School Education Association. In the spring, a Council Rock employee, Dolores McCracken, was elected to a two-year term for Treasurer of PSEA. This agreement covers the roles and relationships between Council Rock School District and PSEA for that two-year term.
