Bucks County Duathlon is Sunday

Washington Crossing Historic Park will be abuzz with activity Sunday, when the Fourth annual Bucks County Duathlon comes to town.

The duathlon consists of a two-mile run, 10-mile bike and two-mile run.

“It’s challenging enough for the experienced athlete yet friendly enough for the novice racer,” according to an event press release. The run course traverses the historic Washington Crossing Historic Park, while the bike competition will be held on River Road (Route 32) with great views of the river, according to organizers.

“The distances and having a relatively flat course allows us to attract a lot of beginning multi-sport athletes,’’ said event co-director Eric Stern. “These are athletes that are looking to do something a little different then just a run or bike ride by combining both sports.”

Proceeds from the event will go to the Washington Crossing Visitor Center and the Missy Flynn Fund, named for the Newtown athlete who survived a brain aneurysm in 2005. “Missy recently had some health issues, which warranted a hospital stay, the funds from this event are more important than ever,” organizers said.

“This race can be done by most anyone so grab some friends or family and do as a team’’ said Betz, also a race director. “Seasoned athletes will be challenged and novices will find a course that’s not intimidating and doable.’’

Registration is available at Newtown Bicycle Shop during operating hours.
