Local Resident Headed to Rowing World Championships in Europe

Tewksbury Volpe is one of 50 athletes—25 men and 25 women—who will compete for the United States in the World Rowing Championships Linz, Austria

Newtown resident Jordan Tewksbury Volpe is headed to the 2013 World Rowing Under 23 Championships later this month in Europe.

Tewksbury Volpe is one of 50 athletes—25 men and 25 women—who will compete for the United States in Linz, Austria from July 24 to 28. He will be competing in the lightweight men's pair division.

Tewksbury Volpe, who has been rowing for seven years, is a member of the rowing team at George Washington University.

Currently, he is training in Mercer County, N.J. 

“We will be staying here for another 10 days before we head to Linz on the 19th for the last pre-world's training,” he said.

He said he’s confident of his team’s ability in the world championships. “Practices have been going well and we've gained lots of speed in the last few days so we are feeling good about taking it to the next level,” he said.

The trip is entirely self-funded, Tewksbury Volpe said. “My pair partner Will Robins and I, together with US Rowing, are trying to raise money to help cover at least a portion of the expenses for travel, boat rental, facilities access, etc.,” he said.
