NAC to Offer Scuba Certification Class

The 10-week class will prepare students for a lifelong hobby of underwater exploration

Picture yourself deep in the ocean, frolicking with sunfish and exploring underwater features like coral and shells.

Now you can make that daydream a reality. Best of all, you don’t even need to board a plane to get started.

Beginning next week, Newtown Athletic Club will offer a scuba diving certification class. The class will be held at the NAC’s pool and is taught by instructors from Underwater World of Horsham.

The 10-week class begins Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. and is open to the public. You don’t have to be a NAC member to enroll.

NAC Aquatics Director Brandi Perkovich explained that the class leads participants to certification. However, to complete the certification process, students are required to go on the required open water dives.

The scuba class is a new offering from the NAC.

“Leading up to spring break time, every one comes in to get fit. You know people are planning to go away to somewhere warm and tropical,” Perkovich said. So the NAC decided to prepare those interested in going on an underwater adventure when they arrive at that tropical destination.

Students will spend half of the three-hour class in instruction and the other half in the pool.  Participants will learn about scuba equipment, marine life, marine environment, physics and physiology as it relates to diving, and more.

Underwater World will provide all the necessary equipment for the course, which is $195. (That doesn’t include fees for the certification application.)
