Newtown 12s Lose Second Round in State Tournament

With a 6-2 loss against Devon Strafford on Monday night, the boys must win tonight to stay alive.

Council Rock Newtown 12s will face an elimination game tonight after Monday's 6-2 loss to rival Devon Strafford at the little league State Championship in State College.

Delayed from rain, game play began at 9 p.m.  On the mound for Newtown was Brian Kane.  After a lead-off homer by the Devon squad, Kane settled in and retired the side.

In the bottom of the first inning, Newtown's Zac Deegan slammed a single to the right field fence and was plated on a home run by third baseman Trevor Tucillo.

In the second inning, Newtown loaded the bases but failed to score.  Over the next few innings, great defense by both teams kept the score at 2-1 Newtown.

But in the top of the fourth inning, Devon tied the score on another homerun.  With runners on second and third bases, Kane was lifted for Seumus Crossett and then Pat Bartlett.  Devon Strafford scored four more runs that inning to take a 6-2 lead.

Devon was able to keep Newtown's usually dependable offense in check with strong pitching efforts.

Newtown is now faced with elimination in the loser's bracket.  Newtown will take on Butler Township tonight at 5 p.m. The loser of that game will head home.

If successful tonight, Newtown will face another elimination game on Wednesday.
