Newtown 12s Still Alive in State Tournament

In a must-win situation, Newtown beat Butler last night, 17-3.

Newtown 12s showed their grit one more time Tuesday night in State College at the Pennsylvania Little League Championships.  In a must-win situation, the team dug deep to defeat a formidable Butler team, 17-3.

Faced with elimination, the boys showed heart and determination in besting this cross-state rival.

The starting pitcher was Zac Deegan, who manned the hill for the first couple of innings. He was relieved by Cavan Tully for an inning, Eric Miller for two, Seumus Crossett for one and Matt Rowen for the final batter.

Going into the fourth inning, the score was tied 3-3. Then the Newtown bats came alive. 

In the first inning, Trevor Tuccillo rocketed a hit to plate Cavan Tully and Zac Deegan, who both singled sharply to start the game.

Butler fought back and tied the score in the third.  In the fourth, Newtown broke the game wide open, scoring nine runs on singles, doubles, walks and a home run. 

Leading the hitting was Tuccillo, Matt Rowen, Deegan, Pat Barlett, Jared Schram, Tully and J. Alex Miller.  Newtown completed the scoring in the sixth inning with Brian Kane's shot to dead center.

Newtown is faced with elimination again tonight against defending State Champions West Point.  Tonight's game is a rematch of 2010 State Championship final game. The 5 p.m. game will be a chance for Newtown to face the competitor that beat them in the 2010 state championship finals last year.
