Piccolo Trattoria Presents $3,500 to First Fourth Committee for Fireworks

The fireworks were at risk of being cancelled until Piccolo announced it would donate the necessary $3,500 for the show.

Piccolo Trattoria presented a $3,500 check to Newtown's First Fourth Committee Tuesday evening. The money will sponsor the fireworks show on July 6.

The local restaurant's sponsorship of the fireworks was critical in allowing the annual event to continue. The fireworks were at risk of being cancelled until Piccolo announced it would donate the necessary $3,500 for the show.

Piccolo Trattoria's Business Manager Jim Bowe told Patch that the restaurant’s owner, Fahmi Elabed, has been involved with the town’s Independence Day festivities for many years.

In addition to participating with the planning, Elabed has taken his family to First Fourth for many years “and always loved it,” Bowe said.

Recently, the restaurant was looking for some opportunities to give back to the community, Bowe said, adding sponsoring the fireworks was the perfect fit.

First Fourth is Newtown's annual Independence Day celebration, held each year on the first Saturday in July. It typically features a parade and party with fireworks to cap off the night at Newtown Middle School. However, due to a lack of volunteers, Gordon said there will be no parade this year.

Gordon said the parade is not gone for good; he hopes to bring it back for next year's event provided he can organize enough volunteers ahead of time.
