Piccolo Trattoria to Sponsor First Fourth Fireworks

The annual First Fourth fireworks were at risk of being cancelled until Piccolo Trattoria stepped up to sponsor the show.

The show will go on.

Piccolo Trattoria announced Friday it will sponsor Newtown’s First Fouth fireworks.

Newtown Patch reported Friday morning that the fireworks were in jeopardy after the original sponsor backed out. First Fourth Committee Chairman Joe Gordon said if he couldn’t find someone to sponsor the fireworks for $3,500 by next week, the show likely wouldn’t happen.

Well, Gordon doesn’t have to worry anymore. Piccolo Trattoria has stepped up and Gordon said he’s “real relieved.”

Piccolo Trattoria's Business Manager Jim Bowe said the restaurant’s owner, Fahmi Elabed, has been involved with the town’s Independence Day festivities for many years.

In addition to participating with the planning, Elabed has taken his family to First Fourth for many years “and always loved it,” Bowe said.

Recently, the restaurant was looking for some opportunities to give back to the community, Bowe said, adding sponsoring the fireworks was the perfect fit.

First Fourth is Newtown's annual Independence Day celebration, held each year on the first Saturday in July. It typically features a parade and party with fireworks to cap off the night at Newtown Middle School. However, due to a lack of volunteers, Gordon said there will be no parade this year.

Gordon said the parade is not gone for good; he hopes to bring it back for next year's event provided he can organize enough volunteers ahead of time.
