Local Church To Host Trick-or-Treating Alternative

The Oct. 31 outdoor community event at The Crossing will feature candy, prizes and fun for kids of all ages.

Are you looking for an alternative to the standard trick-or-treating tradition?

Washington Crossing United Methodist Church is hosting a special event Halloween night for kids and their families that is just that.

The event, called Trunk Or Treat, is a twist on traditional Halloween trick-or-treating but instead of going door to door to collect candy, children will go trunk to trunk at the church’s parking lot. The outdoor event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. and is open to the public.

Church volunteers will dress in costumes and decorate their vehicles, according to organizers. Volunteers will park their decorated vehicles in a semicircle and turn the trunks into front porches, where children can stop by and collect pre-wrapped candy, pencils, crayons, magnets, stickers, books and other goodies.

Children will vote on the “best dressed trunk” and the winning entry will receive a prize. Check out examples of decorated cars at www.safefun4kids.com.

Churches are always finding innovative ways to connect with their congregation and their communities, said Pastor Ruth Hendrickson.

“Halloween can be a scary time for many preschoolers and toddlers, so we wanted to provide stress-free activities that allows children of all ages and adults to get dressed up and have a fun family outing,” said Hendrickson.

“We also wanted to infuse light into what has become a dark holiday and make it fun and not frightening for younger children,” she added.

General admission is free. The cost of the moon bounce, games, balloon animals and face painting is $2 per person or $10 per family.
