Local Nonprofit Holding Pet Fair, Dog Walk

Focus on Homeless Animals will host "Paws in the Park" next Sunday, Sept. 25 at Tyler State Park/Bucks County Community College. The event will raise money to build a no-kill shelter in Bucks County.

There are always a lot of fun family events for kids in the fall.

But next Sunday, there’s an event even the four-legged members of your family will enjoy.

Focus on Homeless Animals, an animal rescue organization based in Washington Crossing, will host “Paws in the Park” -- a dog walk and fair -- on Sunday, Sept. 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will be held at Bucks County Community College/Tyler State Park and will feature music, children’s entertainment, a dog contest with prizes, food, raffles, various vendors, agility and Frisbee demonstrations, pet trainers, face painting and more.

Paws in the Park will raise money to meet the costs of rescuing animals and also to help the organization achieve its goal of building a “no-kill” animal shelter in Bucks County.

Gloria Aceti, president and founder of Focus on Homeless Animals, said this is the first year the organization has held the event. “There will be fun raffles, doggie contests, music, food, and things for kids to do so I think it’s going to be a nice, quality day out supporting a good cause,” she said.

Focus on Homeless Animals deals mostly with dogs but sometimes takes in cats, Aceti said.

Right now, the organization depends heavily on foster homes for the pets. “We want to build a facility that will promote not only a no-kill philosophy but give us the grounds to do behavioral intervention, socialization and have a place for the dogs to exercise,” she said.

All of those components would prepare the animals for their new home, she said. “All the way around, it’s great for Bucks County. Right now if someone had to give away their dog in Bucks County, they would have to worry about euthanizing the dog,” Aceti said.

Aceti said the group has drawings for a modular shelter and are looking for the land to make the plan come to fruition.

“We want to build something that is reasonable in size and finances to start. We want to show people on a smaller scale first what we can accomplish,” she said, adding that the modular shelter can be easily expanded if need be.

Registration for the walk is $25 and begins at 9:30 a.m. that morning. The walk starts at 10 a.m.

To find the fair, go to Bucks County Community College’s Newtown Campus on Swamp Road. Once you enter, park on the lot to the left. Attendants will be there to help you find the path to the event.
