Relay for Life Fundraising Continues Ahead of June 8 Event

As of Thursday afternoon, 254 participants in the local Relay for Life have raised more than $25,300 for the American Cancer Society.

Local Relay for Life participants are holding two upcoming fundraisers in preparation for the June event.

Newtown's Relay For Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, will be held June 8 at Council Rock High School North.

Council Rock North junior Dan Pomerantz is organizing the event and even got a purple Mohawk earlier this month in recognition of fundraising efforts. He promised he’d get the new hairstyle if participants raised $7,500 by April 30.

And the fundraising will continue over the next few days.

  • On Friday, Team “Purple Lightning” is hosting an ice cream social at Sweet Pea. Between 5 and 8 p.m., a percentage of sales will go to the Relay for Life.
  • On Monday at 2:30 p.m., Pomerantz will be at ACME along with his team members to fundraise and register participants.

Pomerantz told Patch he was motivated to organize the Relay for Life in Newtown after participating in a similar event while living in North Carolina. “I realized that these events were amazing community building opportunities, so I decided to start one here,” he said.

“We intend to make Relay for Life an annual event at Council Rock,” he said.
