Celebration Planned for Veterans Park Opening Day

The celebration will feature games, a community youth yard sale and scarecrow making.

Newtown Township is gearing up to welcome athletes and families to Veterans Park Saturday for an opening day celebration.

The celebration will feature games, a community youth yard sale and scarecrow making. The festivities will kick off at 9 a.m. with a ribbon cutting.

Veterans Park is located off Route 413 (Durham Road) across the street from Clark Nature Center.

Scarecrow making will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. Materials will be provided but participants should bring jeans, a button down-long sleeve shirt, twine and any other desired decorations. A $10 materials fee is due  at the beginning of class ($13 for nonresidents). Visit www.newtownfun.com for details. 

The Community Youth Yard Sale, also sponsored by Newtown Township Parks and Rec, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. For a seller space, contact megans@twp.newtown.pa.us or call 215-968-2800 ext. 239. Each spot is $20; $25 for nonresidents.

All proceeds from yard sale space purchases will benefit the fundraising efforts for Noah's Playground at Veteran's Park. Vendors are responsible for their items; all unsold items must be taken back home. 

Here’s the schedule for the opening day celebration:

9 a.m. - ribbon cutting and Chick-fil-A family games
9:30 a.m. - baseball same at the U.S. Marine Field lacrosse game at the U.S. Merchant Marine Field; soccer game at the U.S. Navy Field; soccer game at the U.S. Coast Guard Field
10 a.m. - scarecrow making
11 a.m. - I9 flag football at the U.S. Navy Field

Veterans Park was officially dedicated in May 2011 but because of problems with the quality of the grass, the fields have only been utilized on a limited basis. The park, located off Durham Road across the street from Clark Nature Center, has six ball fields.
