BCCC Alum to Address Graduating Class

Illustrator James Bennett returns to BCCC as commencement speaker.

James Bennett, an award-winning illustrator and graduate graduate of Bucks County Community College, will address the 2013 graduating class at commencement on Thursday.  Bennett, who still lives in Bucks County, earned an associates degree in fine arts from BCCC, continued his education at the School of Visual Arts in New York after his 1983 graduation.  Bennett's work has appeared in the New York Times, Forbes, Time, Sports Illustrated, Mad, Business Week, Reader’s Digest, and Philadelphia magazines. He has also illustrated books including "Tell Me a Scary Story...But Not Too Scary" by Carl Reiner, and "Halloween" by Jerry Seinfeld. The college will recognize Bennett’s achievements by granting him an honorary Doctor of Public Service …

McKessy, Block Victorious in School Board Primary

Incumbent Kyle McKessy won in Region 9 and Andy Block was victorious in Region 8 in the race for Council Rock School Board.

Incumbent Kyle McKessy was reelected to represent Region 9 on the Council Rock School Board during a primary race Tuesday. McKessy and her opponent, Le Sheppard, both cross filed, allowing Democrats and Republicans alike to cast votes for them. McKessy received 72 percent of the Republican vote and 75 percent of the Democratic vote. She received 424 votes to Sheppard's 158. McKessy, a Wrightstown resident, has three children in the district. She has served on the board since 2008; in 2011 and 2012 she was board president. This year, she was elected as vice president. In Upper Makefield, resident Andy Block was victorious in a three-way race for Region 8. Block bested Diana Nolan and Theo Caputi. Block received 733 votes; Nolan received 554…

No Increase in School Lunch Prices Next Year

Elementary school lunch prices will remain at $2.75 and middle school prices will remain at $3.25 for Council Rock School District students.

Council Rock elementary and middle school students will pay the same for lunch next year. Council Rock Director of Business Administration Rob Reinhart on Thursday presented the board with the lunch prices for the 2013-2014 school year.  "All the costs of student lunches are going to remain the same," Reinhart said. Elementary school lunch prices will likely remain at $2.75 and middle school prices will likely remain at $3.25. The only increases will be for four items on the high schools' extensive a la carte menu, which includes paninis, soups, tacos and more. Lunch Prices on the Menu Thursday

The Council Rock School District Administration is recommending that lunch prices remain at $2.75 and middle school prices will likely remain at $3.25.

The cost of lunch for Council Rock middle and elementary school students will likely stay the same next year. Elementary school lunch prices will likely remain at $2.75 and middle school prices will likely remain at $3.25. The Council Rock School Board is expected to approve the prices, which are recommended by the district administration, at a meeting Thursday. Council Rock uses Chartwells Food Service as its lunch provider.  School lunch prices increased this year because of new mandates requiring certain healthy components be served with each meal. From 2011-2012 to this school year, elementary school lunches went up from $2.55 to $2.75 and middle school lunches increased by a quarter, from $3 to $3.25. The high schools have a la carte …

Test Drive a Car, Raise $20 for the Local Marching Band

Bill Marsh Ford and Council Rock High School North Band Parents Association are partnering for the 'Drive 4 UR School' fundraiser at Council Rock High School North on Saturday.

Looking for a new car or just want to help out the local marching band? You can do both this Saturday, when Bill Marsh Ford and Council Rock High School North Band Parents Association partner for the “Drive 4 UR School” fundraiser at Council Rock High School North. Come to the school between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., test drive a car and the band gets $20 for each test drive, explained parent Julie Lambert. “It is that easy,” she said.  The goal is to raise as much as $6,000 in support of the marching band, which performs throughout the community during holiday parades and, of course, during local football games. “As a business in our community, we understand just how hard it is to make a positive difference in the lives of those around us,” said…

Food, Wine, Hot Air Balloon Rides at Annual Tyler Tasting

The 25th Annual Tasting for Tyler event, which will be held June 7, will feature food, music, a live auction and even tethered hot air balloon rides.

Bucks County Community College is gearing up for the 25th Annual Tasting for Tyler event, which will be held June 7 and will feature food, music, a live auction and even tethered hot air balloon rides. The event, formerly known as the Tyler Tasting Party, will be held from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in historic Tyler Hall on BCCC’s Newtown Campus. The fundraiser, which has become one of Bucks County’s “premiere food and wine events,” according to organizers, will feature more than 30 restaurants, wineries, caterers and bakeries. Culinary Arts Students Have an 'Ice' Day

Students enrolled in Bucks County Community College's Culinary Arts program finish the apprenticeship with a two-week training in ice carving.

After spending three years frying, chopping, mixing and everything else in-between, the future master chefs enrolled in Bucks County Community College's Culinary Arts program took a break from the kitchen knives and broke out the chainsaws last week. The upgrade to power tools is necessary in order to complete the traditional ice-carving capstone project each student needs to finish the school's apprenticeship program. It may seem unusual at first to take the cooks away from the ovens, but culinary arts professor and program coordinator Earl Arrowood says ice-sculpting is an important skill for gourmet chefs to have in their repertoire. "We just want them to know the basics," said Arrowood. "It adds an extra level of professionalism for …

Newsweek Ranks Council Rock North 338 in U.S., 11th in PA

Council Rock North came in 11th in the state in Newsweek's list of the nation's top 2,000 public high schools.

Newsweek has ranked Council Rock North and South high schools among the top 2,000 public high schools in the country. Council Rock North was ranked #338 and Council Rock South was ranked #539. Only one high school in Bucks County—New Hope-Solebury—was ranked ahead of Council Rock North, which came in 11th in the state. New Hope-Solebury was ranked #324. "Congratulations to both high schools and to our school community that supports our great schools," an email from Council Rock administrators said. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. Wrightstown Residents to Vie for School Board Seat

Le Sheppard will challenge incumbent Kyle McKessy for the seat representing Region 9 on the Council Rock School Board.

Wrightstown residents Kyle McKessy and Le Sheppard will face off in the primary this month to represent region 9 on the Council Rock School Board. Region 9 includes all of Wrightstown and Newtown Township districts 1 and 2. The primary will be held May 21. Both candidates have cross filed. McKessy, the incumbent who has been endorsed by both the local Republicans and Democrats, has served on the board since 2008. She moved to Newtown in 1993 and became a Wrightstown resident in 1998. She is married with three children in the district. McKessy received a Bachelor’s degree from Elizabethtown College and a Masters degree from Temple University.
