According to a press release, Supervalu has reached an agreement to sell Acme, along with four other supermarket chains it owns, to AB Acquisition. The total sale is for 877 stores. The $3.3 billion transaction also includes the following supermarket chains: Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s and Star Market. I'm happy we do not have a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods and if we had to choose a real supper market I think Wegman's would be nice, but fortunately Acme is here to stay.   more ›

Former Employees Reflect on Sycamore Street Acme

About 15 former Syscamore Street Acme employees reflected on their memories of the store.

For Doris Randolph, Saturday’s demolition of the Sycamore Street Acme was a bittersweet moment. The Northampton resident grew up in Newtown Borough and worked at the grocery store for nearly seven years, starting in 1955 when she was 16. “I’m sad to see it go,” said Randolph, who was known during her time at the store as Doris Wilson. Randolph and about 15 people who formerly worked at the Sycamore Street Acme location attended a small get together and photo session in the minutes before the decaying building was annihilated by demolition crews. “It’s nice to see everyone here,” said Jim Brannigan, who worked as a produce manager at the store for 20 years. Brannigan said he fondly looks back on the people, the countless employee picnics …

Old Acme Demolition: 'Tear Down These Walls'

Demolition on the Acme building on Sycamore Street in Newtown began after a party Saturday morning.

Saturday morning's demolition of the old Sycamore Street Acme was a moment that Mick Petrucci, a Newtown resident and president of the Newtown Business Association, has been waiting to happen for years. "I've had many, many phone calls and late night meetings with people wanting to know why I couldn't do anything to take this building down," Petrucci said to the over 1,000 people who gathered outside the long-abandoned grocery store. "I'm personally happy today." With that, the business association president said, "Mr. Worthington, tear down these walls!" Jim Worthington, a managing partner for development project that will be built at the site, thanked township officials and residents for their help and patience with the project. "I'm …

The building demolition will begin with a party of Saturday morning. Festivities will begin at 10 a.m. and will feature local dignitaries, light refreshments and activities for Newtown’s youngest residents. Old Acme to be Reduced to Rubble in Coming Weeks

The demolition of the old Acme building on Sycamore Street will start with a party on Sept. 22. It's an event that has been years in the making.

The dilapidated former Acme on Sycamore Street is expected to be reduced to a pile of rubble in the coming weeks as demolition of the structure will begin on Sept. 22. The demolition will be the first step toward construction of the The Promenade, a mixed-use retail and residential development, that will anchor the site. When the wrecking ball strikes the brick walls of the former grocery store there will be a celebration, Jim Worthington said Friday afternoon. Worthington is a managing partner for The Promenade. The demolition celebration is set to start at 10 a.m. on Sept. 22 and will feature local dignitaries, light refreshments and activities for Newtown’s youngest residents.  Worthington said that demolition crews will work prior to…

Struggling Acme Switches CEOs

The grocery chain's most recent quarterly report raised the question of whether it might be up for sale.

Acme Markets parent company SuperValu Inc. on Monday replaced president and CEO Craig Herkert with board chairman Wayne Sales, less than three weeks after the grocery chain's dismal quarterly report. Acme operates a store on West Road in Newtown Township. "We will take significant cost out of the business, and move with urgency in our retail food business to lower prices and create points of sustainable differentiation for our customers," Sales said in a statement from the company. In the report July 12, the company reported falling sales, vowed to cut costs and said it planned to withhold investor dividends. Moreover, its stated plan to "explore strategic alternatives" was characterized by The Philadelphia Inquirer as "corporate …

Borough to Write Letter of Concern to Township Supervisors, Zoning Board

Council President Julia Woldorf will address the council's concern for undeveloped property in a letter to the township supervisors and zoning board.

Newtown Borough council decided at Wednesday night's meeting to write a letter to the township addressing ongoing concern about undeveloped property. Tonight, Thursday, Nov. 10, Newtown Township's Zoning Hearing Board will meet to discuss a revised plan for the former Acme site—The Promenade—on Sycamore Street. The plan has room for 116 parking spaces, which is 36 shy of what is required by township rules, and is part of the Borough's concern. "It's important to formally register concern," Borough councilmember Mike Sellers said. He added that it is necessary to send a letter of ongoing concern for the property that "remains to be an undeveloped eyesore." Though the property is not in the borough, he said it is registering concern in the …
