Effort to Protect Historic Bridge Continues Despite PennDOT Retreat

The Centre Avenue bridge may be off PennDOT's immediate to-do list, but that doesn't mean local preservationists are giving up on the effort to protect the 200-year-old structure.

PennDOT may have temporarily halted its controversial plan to rehabilitate the historic Centre Avenue bridge, but that doesn’t mean the group formed to protect the local landmark is calling it quits. During a public meeting Thursday, representatives from the Newtown Historic Association, The First National Bank and Trust Company of Newtown and the Newtown Creek Coalition updated the public on their effort to preserve the 200-year-old bridge. PennDOT announced in February it planned to rehabilitate the Centre Avenue Bridge, which crosses the Newtown Creek. The stone arch bridge is the oldest in Bucks County and is on the National Register of Historic Places.   The initial plan was to dismantle the bridge down to the arches and fill the …

The rehabilitation project for the 200-year-old bridge will not go out to bid as planned next month.

PennDOT is removing the Centre Avenue Bridge from a list of projects that are going out to bid next month, officials confirmed Thursday. Eugene Blaum, PennDOT assistant press secretary, said the project was removed from the list so the agency can look further into community concerns with the proposal. “We don’t want to hold up the other projects,” Blaum said. It's important for people to organize to protect this bridge. PennDot has one of the nation's most anti-preservation records in the nation. This is my opinion but their demolition of historic spans is known far and wide in preservation circles. Hon.
