Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered to .05 Percent?

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.

One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is the proposal reasonable? About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. Internationally, only a handful of countries, including Canada, the United States and England, have a BAC limit of .08 while most of the …

Four DUI Arrests Made Over the Weekend in Newtown

Newtown Township Police Department made four arrests for Driving Under the Influence over the past weekend.

Newtown Township Police Department made four DUI arrests over the past weekend. The first incident occurred just before 9 p.m. Friday when a 47-year-old Philadelphia man was stopped on Second Street Pike in Wrightstown Township. After field sobriety tests, the man was arrested on suspicion of DUI. He transported to Saint Mary Medical Center to have blood drawn for testing. Charges of DUI are pending the results of the blood work.      At approximately 3:25 a.m. Saturday, a 50-year-old Northampton Township resident was arrested after an officer observed her commit multiple traffic violations in the area of the Newtown Bypass and Sycamore Street. Drunk Man Drives to Police Station; DUI Charges Pending

DUI charges are pending for an intoxicated man who drove to the police department to complain about being fired from his job.

Charges for DUI are pending after a man, who showed signs of intoxication, drove to the Northampton Township Police Department to complain about being fired from his job, according to police reports. Just before 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, a man who walked into the Northampton Township Police Head Quarters displayed signs of intoxication and was in an agitated state over having been terminated by his employer, a police blotter said. Officers found that the 53-year-old Newtown man had driven to the station.  He was unable to successfully complete a series of field dexterity tests and was taken into custody on suspicion of having been driving while under the influence. Early Morning Accident Leaves Path of Destruction, Ends in DUI

A 25-year-old Newtown Township resident was charged with DUI and Reckless Driving after the early-morning incident on South Sycamore Street.

A path of destruction led Newtown Township police to a man suspected of driving under the influence early this morning on South Sycamore Street. Shortly after 1 a.m., police responded to a report of a one-car accident. But when they arrived on the scene, they couldn’t find the car. Police said they “followed a path of damaged property” – which included a destroyed mailbox, two knocked-over light poles and an uprooted tree – to the driver on Buck Rock near Mill Pond Road. Police have not released the name of the driver but said he’s a 25-year-old township resident. He was charged with DUI, Reckless Driving and accidents involving unattended property, police said. Teens Involved in Fiery Wreck at Tyler State Park [Updated]

Two teenage girls from Levittown were involved in a scary wreck at Tyler State Park in Newtown last week. The driver is suspected of driving drunk.

  Two teenage girls from Levittown were involved in a fiery car wreck at Tyler State Park last week. The girls are suspected of being drunk at the time. The driver, a 19-year-old female, and the lone passenger, a 16-year-old female, appeared intoxicated and gave the emergency workers a hard time in the moments after the crash, police said. The driver failed a breathalyzer test at the scene and was taken to St. Mary Medical Center for further testing, the results of which have not yet be received by police. The passenger of the car suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital by EMTs. When police arrived to the Richboro Road entrance of Tyler State Park at 7:10 p.m. last Monday, officers found the 19-year-old's vehicle flipped on …

PennDOT, Police to Partner for Labor Day DUI Enforcement

Labor Day DUI enforcement is to increase awareness of drugged-driving, according to PennDOT.

  State and local police, along with PennDOT, will take part in a national enforcement effort through Labor Day on September 3, targeting motorists driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" effort will target impaired drivers and highlight the worsening problem of drugged driving. "As we remind motorists to drive sober for the Labor Day holiday, we also want to raise awareness of the growing safety threat that drugged drivers present," PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch said. "While overall DUI crashes are trending downward, we're seeing a troubling increase in drug-related crashes each year." PennDOT statistics for 2011 show there were 3,073 drug-related crashes statewide, with 116 fatalities in …

Troopers Charge Newtown Man in DUI Crash

State Police responded to the scene of an accident in Hulmeville and found the driver to be under the influence.

  The following arrest information was provided by the Pennsylvania State Police Trevose station. It does not imply conviction. Trevose troopers arrested an allegedly drunk driver after a car crash in Bucks County. On Aug. 21 at 5:53 p.m., state police responded to the scene of a two-vehicle collision on S. Bellevue Avenue in Hulmeville. Police said a vehicle driven by James C. Merrill, 39, of Newtown, struck another vehicle driven by a 31-year-old woman from Bensalem. No serious injuries were reported. Upon investigation, Merrill was found to be intoxicated. He was arrested for DUI and the traffic violations related to the crash. Merrill was given a blood test, processed and released. Man Found Asleep in Car on Richboro Road

Richard Forchetti had no idea why he was in the car, police said.

  Dude, who’s in my car? A 36-year-old Newtown Township man was found sleeping in a vehicle parked outside of a home on Richboro Road. Richard Forchetti, who was reported by police to appear intoxicated, was cited with public drunkenness after the Sunday morning incident. A Richboro Road resident called police at 3 a.m. to report that an unknown man was sleeping in his car, police said. When officers woke Forchetti, he was not sure why he was in the vehicle or where he lived, according to a police report. Using the subject’s cell phone, police made contact with a family member and later released Forchetti to the custody of a family member. In 2008, Forchetti was found guilty of a DUI charge he received in Newtown Township, court records …

Troopers Charge Three with Drunk Driving

The following arrest information was provided by the Bensalem Township Police Department. It does not imply conviction.

Between Feb. 23-24, Trevose troopers investigated the following incidents: On Feb. 23 at 3:33 a.m., state police stopped a vehicle for speeding on I-95 at milepost 37.9 in Bensalem. The driver, Heather A. Michener, 29, of Levittown, was found to be intoxicated. She was arrested for DUI. Trooper Kevin Lee investigated the incident. On Feb. 23 at 10:11 p.m., state police responded to a vehicle that went off the road into a wooded shoulder off I-95 exit 46. Police arrested the driver, Mitchell E. Galietta, 35, of Newtown. Trooper William Hoogerhyde investigated the incident. On Feb. 24 at 2:34 a.m., state police stopped a vehicle for traffic violations on I-95 southbound at Street Road. The driver, Daniel J.
