The Federal Trade Commission will require Ahold, Giant’s parent company, to sell the Newtown Genuardi’s to McCaffrey’s.
The Federal Trade Commission today made public its ruling on Giant’s proposed acquisition of more than a dozen Genuardi’s supermarkets in the Philadelphia region. The FTC will require Ahold, Giant’s parent company, to sell the Newtown Genuardi’s to McCaffrey’s. The sale of the Newtown store, which was initially part of the 16-store deal, will settle charges that Giant’s proposed acquisition of the Genuardi's supermarket chain otherwise would be anticompetitive, an FTC press release said. According to the FTC's complaint, Ahold's acquisition of Genuardi's would violate the FTC Act and Section 7 of the Clayton Act. Specifically, the FTC alleges that it would reduce the number of supermarket competitors in Newtown from three to two, with …

McCaffrey’s, a family-owned supermarket chain with locations in Yardley, Princeton, N.J. and West Windsor, N.J., will be taking over the Newtown Genuardi's instead of Giant.
Genuardi’s in Newtown will now become a McCaffrey’s so that Giant can obtain regulatory clearance from the Federal Trade Commission to purchase more than a dozen other stores in the Philadelphia region, a Giant spokesman confirmed Thursday. “As a condition to the closing of the Genuardi’s transaction, Giant has agreed to sell the Newtown Genuardi’s store in order to obtain regulatory clearance from the Federal Trade Commission,” said Christopher Brand. McCaffrey’s, a family-owned supermarket chain with locations in Yardley, Princeton, N.J. and West Windsor, N.J., will be taking over the space. According to published reports, McCaffrey’s owner, Jim McCaffrey, made the announcement to Genuardi’s employees on Wednesday. In January, Giant …

According to an article on Phillyburbs.com, “sources familiar with the deal” told the publication that the family-owned supermarket chain would instead be taking over the space.
The Genuardi’s in Newtown will become a McCaffrey’s, not a Giant, according to a story published on phillyburbs.com. According to the article, “sources familiar with the deal” told the publication that the family-owned supermarket chain would instead be taking over the space. On Friday, Christopher Brand, a Giant spokesman, told Patch there was “nothing to announce at this time regarding our agreement with Safeway to purchase 16 Genuardi's stores.” Brand went on to say that Giant was awaiting a decision from the Federal Trade Commission. Sources from the FTC, when contacted recently, said they had no information to share regarding the deal. According to FTC officials, the official determination on the Genuardi’s to Giant deal hasn’t been…

A spokesman for Giant said no date has been set for the supermarket chain to take over Genuardi's.
Despite what the cashiers may tell you, a date for Genuardi's to convert to Giant has not been set yet. Christopher Brand, a spokesman for Giant, said the supermarket chain has not finalized a date for the store to change hands. "We do not know when the final regulatory approval decision will come," Brand said in an email Sunday. The deal is subject to Federal Trade Commission review. But when the transition does take place, the store will close for approximately a week, Brand said. When the store changes hands, the Giant brand will be offered instead of the Safeway brand. Genuardi's is owned by Safeway. In January, Giant announced it would purchase 16 Genuardi’s stores in the Greater Philadelphia region, including the one in the Village…

545 people have signed a petition seeking supermarket diversity in the area, organizers said Tuesday.
Four area residents who started a petition seeking supermarket diversity have exceeded their goal of 500 signatures, Gigi Arnold said Tuesday. Arnold, a Northampton Township resident who has been working to get signatures for the petition she and the others started in January, said they now have 545 people on board. She said the petition has been sent to the corporate offices of Whole Foods and Wegmans. After the news that Giant is taking over several area Genuardi’s, including the one in Newtown, Arnold said she was prompted to act. The petition, which the group circulated throughout Newtown and beyond, reads: “The purchase of Genuardi’s by the Giant Corporation promotes stagnation in the marketplace. An example of a diverse and …

Giant already operates 17 stores within a 10-mile radius of Newtown. So why would it want to operate yet another in the Village at Newtown Shopping Center?
Another Giant? Why? That’s the question that many around town are asking after Giant announced last week it will be taking over the local Genuardi’s by the middle of the year. Giant, a supermarket chain headquartered in Carlisle, plans to purchase 16 Genuardi’s stores in the Greater Philadelphia region, including the one in the Village at Newtown Shopping Center. The $106 million transaction also includes Genuardi’s stores in Langhorne, Jamison, Chalfont and West Chester. The fact that Giant already operates 17 stores within a 10-mile radius of Newtown – one just two miles away from the current Genuardi's – has caused many to wonder why the supermarket is seeking to open even more locations in the area. Based on the more than 45 comments…
