“Almost, Maine” will be performed Thursday through Oct. 24. The play runs for one week with no performance on Monday, Oct. 22
Newtown Arts Company’s production of John Cariani’s "Almost, Maine," opens Thursday at the Newtown Theatre. The Newtown Arts Company offers the following description of the production: “On a cold, clear, moonless Friday night at 9 p.m. in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the Aurora Borealis hovers in the star filled night sky, residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised, hearts are broken, love is lost, found and confounded. But the bruises heal and the hearts mend--almost--in what has been described as a delightful midwinter night’s dream. Almost, Maine is about one moment in time, exploring the …

Neil Simon finds the funny in dysfunctional family life.
The themes in Neil Simon’s “Lost in Yonkers” are as relevant today as when the play is set – in the 1940s: a struggling national economy near the end of a long war, a family burdened by the economic hardships of healthcare and the ubiquitous dysfunctional family. It is that last theme that adds the humor to the poignancy of what is considered by many to be one of Simon’s best works. The play opens today at the Newtown Theatre and runs through June 27. Fran Kane, the director, admires the play because “it’s a lot like life.” She said the themes of surviving hardship and losses in life are relatable, especially considering Simon’s prowess of evoking both laughter and tears. Kane explained that his characters all cope with their struggles, …

Newtown Arts Company will hold auditions for “The Music Man,” this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. at the Newtown Theatre. The director is seeking 20 to 30 actors and is casting all roles. “The Music Man” is written by Meredith Wilson and is a musical tribute to small-town life, according to a description on the Newtown Arts Company’s website. The play “follows the exploits of a fast-talking salesman and con artist who arrives in River City, Iowa, in 1912. Planning to set up a boy’s band and abscond with the money raised for musical instruments, he is undone by a local librarian and music teacher,” according to the description. The play is “wickedly funny and romantic with quirky characters and a nostalgic yet rousing musical score.” …

Newtown Arts Company and Newtown Theatre continue with an annual tradition once held at the Bucks County Playhouse.
Last May, Newtown Arts Company and Newtown Theatre joined forces to recreate the annual student theater competition held for 43 years at the Bucks County Playhouse, which closed its doors in December 2010. NAC board member Kristin Kauffman led the charge in organizing the effort, which was a success. This year, the five-day festival that concluded Friday was even bigger, giving more students a chance to participate. The four-day festival in 2011 welcomed more than 400 students from 16 schools to perform 28 plays. This year, the schedule had more than 500 students from 19 schools performing and directing 33 plays. Kauffman, who is festival director, said this year's event went well, “pretty much perfectly.” Kauffman once participated in …

Happily ever after may not be all it’s cracked up to be in this twist on fairly tale endings.
For those of us without tiny feet, we secretly hope Cinderella’s prince snores. Short hair? We wish dandruff upon Rapunzel. And Snow White? Humf. A pox upon her – or at least a sunburn. Seems Stephen Sondheim understands our warped desire that the most beautiful and luckiest amongst us don’t get a happily ever after that's any better than our own. His Tony Award-winning musical (with book by James Lapine), “Into the Woods,” drafts new pages after “the end” – in lovely cursive – and finishes the fairy tale. Newtown Arts Company's production of “Into the Woods” will bring the story alive locally. The play opens Thursday at the Newtown Theatre and runs through April 25. Mary Liz Ivins is the director and a Sondheim admirer. The composer …

Newtown Arts Company's “The Pink Panther Strikes Again" opens Thursday at Newtown Theatre.
A story about ineptitude, professional jealousy to the point of insanity and world destruction may not seem like a comedy, but fans of the Pink Panther series know that in “The Pink Panther Strikes Again,” it certainly is. Newtown Arts Company's stage adaptation of Blake Edwards’ 1976 film, “The Pink Panther Strikes Again," opens Thursday at Newtown Theatre. "The Pink Panther Stirkes Again" is the fifth in the series of beloved 1970s films. Director Edwards brought the bungling Parisian detective alive in the form of Peter Sellers. With both of those talented men gone, it’s hard to re-imagine Pink Panther – although Steve Martin did try in the early 2000s. Newtown Arts Company has found the groove. Cue Henry Mancini’s theme song. “Once …

Music lovers’ "Favorite Things" will fill Newtown Theatre this holiday season.
It’s an embarrassment of riches as Newtown Arts Company presents “The Sound of Music,” opening today at the Newtown Theatre. The show runs through Dec. 11. With a dual cast of von Trapp children and Rolf, in addition to an expansive chorus, the production is sure to fill the quaint, historic theater to the brim with song. “We have an amazing group of women for the nuns and postulates,” said Music Director Susan den Outen. “Over 100 kids auditioned. We could have cast a dozen Liesls, they were that wonderful. So many came out who were talented. The kids have been fun to work with; they have a lot of energy.” The trial of working with a dual cast with youngsters in a very small and old theater were overcome, den Outen said, by procedures …

Agatha Christie’s Inspector Poirot is on the case in Newtown.
She’s the best-selling mystery writer of all time and he is her best-loved crime solver. Together, they make for a fun cup of who-done-it joe. Newtown Arts Company presents Agatha Christie’s “Black Coffee” Oct. 13 through 19 at Newtown Theatre. “Black Coffee” is not only the prolific author’s first play, but the only one of her plays to feature her beloved character of many novels, short stories and adapted films: Inspector Hercule Poirot. Bringing the meticulous Belgian detective to Newtown are co-directors Jane DeKorte and Jim McCrane, yet is was DeKorte who did the footwork of tracking down the elusive play. Christie wrote the play in the late 1920s and it was long out of print in the U.S., DeKorte said, but she finally acquired it for …
