The Newtown Hardware House is giving away free gummy worms Saturday to celebrate the opening of fishing season and their vintage fishing lure collection.
Newtown Borough's First Saturday event continues this weekend from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on State Street. The day will feature sales and giveaways—one merchant will even be giving out free gummy worms to celebrate the opening of fishing season. Many stores and restaurants on State Street will also host sidewalk sales, food tastings, discounts and in-store specials. Newtown Borough Merchants are hosting First Saturdays. The monthly event debuts April 6 on State Street.
First Saturdays in Newtown are back. Newtown Borough merchants are bringing back the monthly event on April 6 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. That day, many State Street stores and restaurants will be hosting sidewalk sales, food tastings, discounts and in-store specials. David Witchell, Newtown Bike Shop, Newtown Book and Record Exchange and The Pro Shop will have sidewalk sales. Both The Brick Hotel Restaurant and The Temperance House will be offering discounted lunch with a receipt from any State Street business from that day. The Newtown Borough Planning Commission on Monday gave preliminary approval to plans for a mixed-use building on South State Street that will be home to a renovated state wine and spirits store. Developer Allan Smith, who owns the current state store property on Centre Avenue, is seeking to relocate the store to a building on South State Street. The proposal includes a three-story building that would be constructed adjacent to the Sedia house at South State and Penn streets. The proposal would feature the state store on the ground level and residential units above. Plans for a renovated state wine and spirits store will be reviewed tonight by the Newtown Borough Planning Commission. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at Borough Hall. Luminary kits are again being sold to benefit First Night. The luminaries will be lit starting 5 p.m. Christmas Eve. Kits are $15 and include 15 bags, candles and sand. The effort, called "Light up the Night," will raise funds for the annual New Year's Eve celebration at Council Rock North. It is being organized by residents Frank Brassell and John Burke, who is a Borough Council member. Luminaries will be placed approximately every four feet along the curbs and sidewalks in Newtown Borough. To participate, complete the order form (located to the right of this story under "PDFs") by Dec. 19. The supplies will be delivered the week before Christmas. The proposed budget for 2013 keeps taxes flat for borough residents.
Newtown Borough Council will consider passing a $2.46 million budget for 2013 at a meeting tonight. The meeting gets underway at 7 p.m. at the Chancellor Center. Last month, Borough Council unanimously voted to advertise a $2,461,597 budget for 2013. The budget as drafted will not increase taxes for residents; the average borough household will continue to pay about $360 a year for municipal services. The annual Christmas tree lighting takes place this evening at the Newtown Firehouse on Liberty Street.
The borough's annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony will be held this evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Newtown Firehouse on Liberty Street. After the tree is lit, the Santa House will open. Children can meet Santa and have their picture taken. Santa will also be accepting visitors this Sunday after the holiday parade (which gets underway at 2 p.m.) until 4 p.m. Other Santa House hours are: Dec 8, 9, 15 and 16 from 2 until 4 p.m. This will be the tenth year Santa welcomes Newtown's kids to share their holiday wishes. In 2003, a group of Newtown Borough businesses arranged for the Santa House to be built by a carpentry class at the Middle Bucks Institute of Technology.
