AOL Chairman and CEO Tim Armstrong may stand behind a global brand, but he believes in the power of small businesses. In his recent interview with Patch Partners, a website connecting business owners to Patch in local communities, he offered his insight into what can set a small business above the rest of the competition. Small businesses can hold a lot of power if they are intuitive with their customer base, Armstrong said. “Small businesses can be nimble and can have intimate relationships with their customers. Knowing what their customers want is a very big advantage.” Armstrong also noted that real success lies in what your business offers that the competitors do not. “The advice I would give is the same advice I give myself—how do you…

Staples is offering five small business owners $50,000 in free advertising.
Creating a buzz. Generating a greater awareness. Expanding a customer base. Small business owners can get help with all of those things as part of Staples' "Give Your Small Business the Push It Needs" contest in which five small businesses can enter to win up to $50,000 each in free television advertising in their home market. Results from Staples' National Small Business Survey show that 52 percent of the 500 owners and executives of businesses having fewer than 20 employees said they would expand their business through advertising and direct marketing if they had a larger marketing budget. “With more than 25 years of experience working with our core small business customers, we know that investing in marketing to grow a small business …

Despite steady rain, many local families visited the Bucks County Visitor Center in Bensalem last night hoping to catch a glimpse of Santa and Mrs. Claus, who dropped by to magically turn on the Christmas lights and take photos with good little boys and girls. Santa arrived via a Bensalem fire engine and thrilled the children in attendance, who also had cookies and apple juice for snacks. All were entertained by Bob Egan playing holiday favorites on the piano. If you didn't make it out last night, Santa will return to take photos with children from 1-3 p.m. on Sundays: Nov. 27, Dec. 4 and Dec. 11. On Dec. 11, Santa will stay for an extra hour until 4 p.m. to take pictures with pets. Be sure to bring your own camera. In addition to Santa'…

Everyone knows what belongs on the Thanksgiving table - the turkey, the vegetables, the rolls. But when it comes to wine, some people can get intimidated. Never fear, says Kim Graziano, event planner at Chaddsford Winery. "It's such a fun time to try different wines, maybe local wines you haven't tried before," she said. She said the classic dishes like turkey and ham call for a white wine that's crisp, dry and light. Specifically, she suggests looking at a riesling wine, but make sure it's dry. That means a German, Austrian or Alsatian style - check the label on the back. Sauvignon blanc is another good choice. Plus, with a big meal and large crowd, there's a chance to experiment a little, too. "With a bigger group, there is definitely …

Nina Kaplan will unveil the first installment in her series, “Madison K. Live, Life, Fun,” at a launch party next Saturday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Beautyland Couture (BLC) owner Nina Kaplan will host a public launch party at her store on Saturday, November 19 from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m to unveil her new book, “Madison K. The Lahaska restaurant focuses on serving locally produced foods that fit the season.
Earl's Bucks County aims to bring the farm and market stand to the restaurant in order to reflect the seasons, according to General Manager David Zuckerman. "We want to be as local as possible," Zuckerman said while introducing a four-course menu tasting as part of a Visit Bucks County seminar. As the seasons change, so does the cuisine. The menu at Earl's changes four to five times yearly, Zuckerman explained. "This is a new American cuisine restaurant," he said. "It's seasonally driven. We don't like the menu to be static." So if you enjoy a meal at Earl's Bucks County, you might never be able to have that meal again. If it's during the same season, Zuckerman said you might have a rendition of the same meal, but it probably won't be the…

The Sycamore Grill should be open by Thankgiving and will feature a menu of steaks, seafood and pasta.
If you're in the mood for a margarita and a quesadilla, you won't be able to count on Lilly's Cocina Loca to satisfy your craving in the near future. The Mexican restaurant on Sycamore Street will be closing as soon as next week and the Sycamore Grill will be taking its place. On Wednesday, the Newtown Township Supervisors gave applicant Joe Feraco a "certificate of appropriateness" for paint and sign colors. A certificate of appriopriateness is needed due to the historical nature of the building. Feraco said he is in the process of buying Lilly's and is hoping to settle early next week. From there, he plans to renovate the space and hopes the Sycamore Grill will be open by Thanksgiving. "We’re going to change it from the Mexican theme to…
