Local Shops Participating in Small Business Saturday

The Tubby Olive, Newtown Bookshop, Sweet Pea and Learning Express are participating in Small Business Saturday.

Across the country, Small Business Saturday has become a day during the holiday shopping season that puts the spotlight on locally-owned businesses. Hosted by American Express and sponsored by FedEx, Clear Channel and many other corporate supporters, the third annual Small Business Saturday will be held tomorrow, Nov. 24. The aim is to help small businesses generate exposure and business during the biggest shopping season of the year. Last year, more than 100 million people pledged to "Shop Small," by visiting brick-and-mortar shops in their neighborhoods and American Express estimates this year's turnout will be even greater. Sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is Small Business Saturday. It's a day to patronize and support the locally owned small businesses in your community. The Newtown Bookshop even sent a message out to its patrons reminding them to shop local this holiday season.

  It’s that time of year for shopping and gift giving. And area merchants are urging Newtown residents to remember the importance of shopping local. The Newtown Bookshop even sent a message out to its patrons reminding them to shop local this holiday season. Bookshop owner Christine Godshall said the plea for support was something she always swore she wouldn’t do, but couldn’t help herself this year as the shop is facing tough times. “As we approach this holiday season, the bookshop is at a crossroads. With the struggling economy and the rise of e-books, sales are down significantly.
