Poll: Should Sycamore Street Speed Limit be Reduced?

The township's traffic committee would like to see the speed on Sycamore Street reduced from 35 to 25 in some areas. Is it a good idea?

Newtown Township's traffic committee is recommending that the speed limit on some portions of Sycamore Street be reduced from 35 to 25 miles per hour.  However, the Sycamore Street Community Association, which represents the businesses on the street, opposes the idea. Association representatives said a reduction in speed would be detrimental to Sycamore Street businesses. They believe if cars are forced to go slower, drivers will simply avoid the street altogether. What do you think? Should the speed limit on Sycamore Street be reduced from 35 to 25 miles per hour? Take our poll and share your comments below.

Thanks for the great advice. I already do. I also jog on sidewalks, my favorite type of pathway to take me to said park. Unfortunately, these inevitably cross roads, and until I discover some means of teleporting from one side of the street to the other, I am left with no option but to cross them. It is at such crossings that I have on a few occasions, and through no fault of my own, nearly been …   more ›

Business Community Opposed to Sycamore St. Speed Reduction

Shawn Ward of the Sycamore Street Community Association told the township Board of Supervisors that lower speeds would deter people from coming through town.

Newtown’s advisory traffic committee is recommending a reduction in speed on Sycamore Street, but the business community is pushing back. During Monday’s work session meeting of the Newtown Township Board of Supervisors, traffic committee member Tim Szwedo made the case to reduce the speed from 35 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour on some sections of Sycamore Street. According to Szwedo, the last time the speed limit was surveyed by police was in 2005, when improvements were made to the street, including sidewalks, on-street parking and lighting.  “Since then, businesses have come along and things have changed,” Szwedo said. Szwedo said the traffic committee believes the corridor would benefit from a lower speed limit between the …

Trying to cross Sycamore avenue anywhere between the Bypass and Linton Hill Rd is like running the Gaunlet. Then just try it with little kids and while pushing a stroller. Speed limits in PA are bizarre. Its a significant pedestrian area. Most places have 25 MPH zones where pedestrians are present. If it were 25 perhaps there would be more pedestrians (=more potential customers to patronize local…   more ›

Sycamore Street Speed Limit to be Discussed Tonight

The township's traffic committee is expected to recommend the speed limit on Sycamore Street be reduced to 25 miles per hour.

The speed limit on Sycamore Street will be the topic of conversation at tonight’s Newtown Township Board of Supervisors work session meeting. The meeting, which begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Administration Building, will include a presentation from Tim Szwedo of the township traffic committee. Szwedo is expected to discuss a recommendation to reduce the speed limit on Sycamore Street from 35 to 25 miles per hour.  The Sycamore Street Community Association, a group made up of Sycamore Street businesses and residents, announced it is opposed to the speed limit change. “A reduction in the speed limit will result in a reduction of traffic for which our town center commercial corridor relies upon. Reduction of traffic will result in a reduction …

Beneficial Bank Hearing Concludes; Decision Coming Later This Month

Beneficial Bank is seeking to build a 3,200-square-foot branch with three drive-through lanes at the site of the former Stockburger dealership at Sycamore Street at Richboro Road.

The Newtown Township Board of Supervisors wrapped up a conditional use hearing for a proposed Beneficial Bank on Sycamore Street after three sessions and hours of testimony. However, no decision was made. The board asked for final plans to be submitted to the township by next Wednesday, Dec. 14. A decision will be made at a board meeting later this month. Philadelphia-based Beneficial Bank, who was represented last night by Doylestown attorney John VanLuvanee, is seeking to build a 3,200-square-foot branch with three drive-through lanes at the site of the former Stockburger dealership at Sycamore Street and Richboro Road. However, there have been objections to the plan by the township's Planning Commission as well as the Sycamore Street …
