Promenade Sewer Plan to be Reviewed Wednesday

Officials say they hope a review of the sewer plans for The Promenade will provide further insight into the project's status.

Newtown Township officials hope a review of the sewer plans for The Promenade development that is on Wednesday’s agenda will provide further insight into the project's status. The Promenade is a mixed-use development slated for the old Acme site on Sycamore Street. It will feature 20,000 square feet of retail space in two buildings, plus 26 one-bedroom apartment rental units. Last summer, after years of decay, the abandoned and decrepit Acme supermarket was torn down. Work on the new development was initially supposed to get underway this spring, according to project investors. But progress seems to have stalled since Anthropologie pulled out as the complex’s anchor tenant. Wednesday's Board of Supervisors agenda includes a “Planning …

The NAC outdoor pool is on target to open for members to swim on May 25, 26 and 27 for the holiday weekend. It will then close until Saturday June 1, at which time it will reopen and remain open. There were delays due to weather and materials arriving late. Unfortunately, pretty typical stuff for construction.   more ›

Anthropologie Pulls Out as Promenade Tenant, Groundbreaking Likely in Early Spring

Anthropologie will no longer be the anchor tenant for The Promenade project but a groundbreaking will still likely occur in late March or early April.

Anthropologie will no longer be the anchor tenant at the Promenade, the new mixed-use development slated for the old Acme site, project investor Jim Worthington confirmed. However, Worthington said construction is still on track to begin this spring. Worthington said he is "95 percent" confident he has a different anchor tenant lined up to fill the approximately 9,000-square-foot spot. Once that business commits, Worthington said he can move forward with getting the necessary financing in place for the project. For instant updates, follow Newtown Patch on Facebook and Twitter. Anthropologie's decision to back out of leasing at The Promenade was part of a higher corporate plan and had nothing to do with the development, Worthington said.  …

Old Acme Demolition: 'Tear Down These Walls'

Demolition on the Acme building on Sycamore Street in Newtown began after a party Saturday morning.

Saturday morning's demolition of the old Sycamore Street Acme was a moment that Mick Petrucci, a Newtown resident and president of the Newtown Business Association, has been waiting to happen for years. "I've had many, many phone calls and late night meetings with people wanting to know why I couldn't do anything to take this building down," Petrucci said to the over 1,000 people who gathered outside the long-abandoned grocery store. "I'm personally happy today." With that, the business association president said, "Mr. Worthington, tear down these walls!" Jim Worthington, a managing partner for development project that will be built at the site, thanked township officials and residents for their help and patience with the project. "I'm …

Old Acme to be Reduced to Rubble in Coming Weeks

The dilapidated former Acme on Sycamore Street is expected to be reduced to a pile of rubble in the coming weeks as demolition of the structure will begin on Sept. 22. Revised Plans for Old Acme Site to be Reviewed Tuesday

The Newtown Township Planning Commission meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Administration Building.

Developers of the Promenade, the project slated for the old Acme site on Sycamore Street, will appear before the Newtown Township Planning Commission on Tuesday.  The applicant is expected to present a revised final plan to construct a mixed-use development on the abandoned site. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at the township Administration Building. This won't be the first time township officials consider approvals for the site. In 2009, the township approved a plan for the site submitted by McGrath that featured a mix of residential units and retail space. Then last summer, the applicant came back before the township with an urgent plea for zoning relief to scale back the plan – and was granted that relief by the zoning board just …
