The Promenade Launches Website

The website features details of the new mixed-use development that is slated for the old Acme site.

Developers of The Promenade, a new mixed-use development slated for the old Acme site, have launched a website that provides details of the project. The site, www.newtownpromenade.com, provides photos of the Acme demolition, community updates and leasing information. The website confirms that Anthropologie, a women's clothing and accessories retailer, will be the main tenant. No further details about other tenants is provided on the website.  In June, Newtown Township gave final approval for the project, which will feature a total of 20,000 square feet of retail space and 26 one-bedroom apartments. During the approval process, the applicant said there would be five retail tenants in the development, including Anthropologie. As per a …

Former Employees Reflect on Sycamore Street Acme

About 15 former Syscamore Street Acme employees reflected on their memories of the store.

For Doris Randolph, Saturday’s demolition of the Sycamore Street Acme was a bittersweet moment. The Northampton resident grew up in Newtown Borough and worked at the grocery store for nearly seven years, starting in 1955 when she was 16. “I’m sad to see it go,” said Randolph, who was known during her time at the store as Doris Wilson. Randolph and about 15 people who formerly worked at the Sycamore Street Acme location attended a small get together and photo session in the minutes before the decaying building was annihilated by demolition crews. “It’s nice to see everyone here,” said Jim Brannigan, who worked as a produce manager at the store for 20 years. Brannigan said he fondly looks back on the people, the countless employee picnics …

Old Acme Demolition: 'Tear Down These Walls'

Demolition on the Acme building on Sycamore Street in Newtown began after a party Saturday morning.

Saturday morning's demolition of the old Sycamore Street Acme was a moment that Mick Petrucci, a Newtown resident and president of the Newtown Business Association, has been waiting to happen for years. "I've had many, many phone calls and late night meetings with people wanting to know why I couldn't do anything to take this building down," Petrucci said to the over 1,000 people who gathered outside the long-abandoned grocery store. "I'm personally happy today." With that, the business association president said, "Mr. Worthington, tear down these walls!" Jim Worthington, a managing partner for development project that will be built at the site, thanked township officials and residents for their help and patience with the project. "I'm …

The store's former employees are invited to attend the Old Acme Site Demo Party on Saturday. Employees of Sycamore Street Acme Wanted

The organizers behind the upcoming Old Acme Site Demo Party are looking for employees of the closed Sycamore Street store to attend the event. "We are reaching out to any former Acme employees who may still be in the area to come out to the 'party' and be recognized by having their picture taken at the site," Linda Mitchell, marketing & public relations director for the Newtown Athletic Club, said in an email. The building demolition will begin with a party of Saturday morning. Festivities will begin at 10 a.m. and will feature local dignitaries, light refreshments and activities for Newtown’s youngest residents. "Progress on this site has been in the works for so long, and the old Acme was such a staple in Newtown for many years, that …

Old Acme to be Reduced to Rubble in Coming Weeks

The demolition of the old Acme building on Sycamore Street will start with a party on Sept. 22. It's an event that has been years in the making.

The dilapidated former Acme on Sycamore Street is expected to be reduced to a pile of rubble in the coming weeks as demolition of the structure will begin on Sept. 22. The demolition will be the first step toward construction of the The Promenade, a mixed-use retail and residential development, that will anchor the site. When the wrecking ball strikes the brick walls of the former grocery store there will be a celebration, Jim Worthington said Friday afternoon. Worthington is a managing partner for The Promenade. The demolition celebration is set to start at 10 a.m. on Sept. 22 and will feature local dignitaries, light refreshments and activities for Newtown’s youngest residents.  Worthington said that demolition crews will work prior to…

Plans Approved for Acme Site, Building to be Demolished in August

Revised plans for a mixed-use development on the old Acme site were approved Wednesday by the township. The applicant said the abandoned building will likely come down in August.

The round of applause that followed the Newtown Township Supervisors’ Wednesday approval of a development on the old Acme site will pale in comparison to the cheers that will undoubtedly ensue when the former grocery store comes crumbling down. That long-awaited event is expected to happen in August. And when it does, it will be a celebration, said Jim Worthington, a project investor for The Promenade. He said the town will be invited to watch as construction trucks knock the abandoned building down to make way for The Promenade, a mixed-used development. “We’ll make it a celebration,” he said. The old Acme on Sycamore Street has for years been known as the town’s biggest eyesore. But with the supervisors' unanimous approval of the revised…

I think this will be good for Newtown, as long as they provide enough parking, unlike the Goodnoe Corner, which is ridiculous. And Mr. Worthington could show good faith by sending the NAC landscaping crew to the Acme site this week and clean up all the weeds at least. Newtown doesn't deserve to have such an eyesore any longer!   more ›

Supervisors to Review Plans for The Promenade

The Newtown Township Board of Supervisors on Wednesday will review the revised plans for a mixed-use development at the old Acme site.

The Newtown Township Board of Supervisors will consider revised plans for a mixed-use development at the old Acme site on Sycamore Street at its meeting Wednesday.  Last week, the Newtown Township Planning Commission recommended approval of the plans. The supervisors meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at the township Administration Building.  Plans for the development, called The Promenade, have been revised since approval was given to McGrath in 2009. The site has sat dormant since that approval.  The new plans feature 20,000 square feet of retail space in two buildings. The previous plans called for 22,600 square feet of retail in one building that featured a breezeway. The new plans feature five retail tenants, including Anthropologie, as well…

Effort to Redevelop Dormant Acme Site 'Moving Again'

“From all indications, the project is moving again,” Board of Supervisors Chairman Mike Gallagher said of The Promenade, which is slated for the old Acme site on Sycamore Street.

The eyesore that everybody loves to hate -- the old Acme site -- may soon see some progress, according to township officials. But residents will have to hold their breath just a bit longer -- or least until June 5. That's when developers of the Promenade, the mixed-use development slated for the site on Sycamore Street, are scheduled to appear before the Newtown Township Planning Commission. Township officials say they are hopeful that the process to improve the vacant property can be expedited and the eyesore can soon become an attractive addition to Sycamore Street. “From all indications, the project is moving again,” Newtown Township Board of Supervisors Chair Mike Gallagher said.  This won't be the first time township officials …

Sad but true The MAN. It would be nice to think that the developers are interested in what's good for the community and people that live and shop there, but in reality, it's all about the MONEY and how much they can make.   more ›
