Morning-after Pill Maker Donates Thousands to Pa. Politicos

Teva Pharmaceuticals, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of generic drugs, gave thousands in campaign dollars to Pennsylvania lawmakers.

By Melissa Daniels | PA Independent HARRISBURG — One of the world’s largest generic drug manufacturers, known for its morning-after pill, has given hundreds of thousands in campaign funds to Pennsylvania politicians. Teva Pharmaceuticals captured headlines this fall, when its Plan B One-Step was offered for free to high school students along with contraception and health-care services through a New York City program. Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, the company’s political action committee, spent more on campaign dollars this year than in the past. Donations totaled more than $275,000, compared with around $138,000 in 2010 and $47,000 in 2008, according to election money tracker OpenSecrets.org. In 2012, the PAC gave: In the U.S. Senate, …

Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Obama defeats Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice presidential running mate, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and surges from …

Jill Biden Energizes Obama Supporters

Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, makes a campaign stop in Wescosville Monday to drum up support for the Obama-Biden ticket in the final weeks of the campaign.

Laura J. Marie has been so frustrated with friends and family who do not support the Obama-Biden ticket that she went online a few days ago to offer to help the president's re-election campaign. "And I was invited here today," she said as she stood among the 100 or so supporters who came to hear Jill Biden speak Monday at the Pennsylvania State Education Association office in Wescosville. "I only wish I did it sooner." Marie, who said she voted for Obama in 2008, was clearly among like-minded individuals as she waited for Jill Biden to approach the podium. Some, like Allentown resident and retired Salisbury High School art teacher Dolly Yanolko, were quite emphatic in their support for the president. “Any teacher who doesn’t vote for a …

Pa. Voter ID Law On Hold Until After Presidential Election

Judge Robert Simpson ruled Tuesday that implementation of Pennsylvania's new Voter ID law be put on hold until after the Nov. 6 general election.

A judge ruled today that Pennsylvania's tough new Voter ID Law should be put on hold until after the Nov. 6 general election, according to an Associated Press report. The ruling can be appealed to the state Supreme Court, which said it would expedite any further action in the case since Election Day is just five weeks away. Do you agree with the ruling? Tell us in the comments section below. Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson heard two days of testimony last week, as directed by the Supreme Court, to determine whether the state has made it easy enough to get a photo ID in order to vote. Opponents say the law, and the process to get an ID, disenfranchises voters. Supporters say the law will prevent voter fraud - but that justification …

Local Audience Says Romney Gives Hope

Find out what Mitt Romney supporters from around the Delaware Valley thought of the Republican presidential candidate's speech at Valley Forge Military Academy & College.

The economy, jobs, military, foreign policy and education were just some of the issues concerning former Gov. Mitt Romney's supporters who came to hear the candidate speak Friday at Valley Forge Military Academy and College.  Wendy Neininger of Willistown Township, a registered Democrat, is supporting Romney. In 2008, Neininger supported Hillary Clinton, but when Clinton lost the Democratic primary to President Barack Obama, Neininger changed her allegiance. Now, she volunteers at the Romney Victory Office in West Chester.  Neininger is concerned about the job market and said college students are scared about the future. “It’s not just the older workers who can’t find jobs; it’s the younger workers too,” she said. Cabrini College students …

Voter ID Case Goes to Pa. Supreme Court Today

The Pa. Supreme Court will hear from opponents of the state's new Voter ID law on Thursday.

Opponents of Pennsylvania's new voter ID will make their case Thursday before the state Supreme Court. There's no time frame for a ruling from the court - but the Nov. 6 General Election is fast approaching.  The Supreme Court is composed of three Republican and three Democratic justices (a seventh judge was suspended while she faces criminal charges). A 3-3 tie would affirm the decision of the lower court, according to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report. Commonwealth Court upheld the law in August. Supporters say the law will prevent voter fraud and imposes the same photo ID standard required in many common circumstances. Challengers say the law is designed to disenfranchise poor and elderly voters who often support Democratic candidates. …

Paul Ryan Stumps in Pennsylvania

Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan courted the Philadelphia suburbs with a stop Tuesday at the American Helicopter Museum in West Chester.

The Republican presidential campaign stopped in Pennsylvania Tuesday as vice presidential nominee Rep. Paul Ryan courted GOP votes in the Philadelphia suburbs. Speaking at the American Helicopter Museum in West Chester, Ryan fired at President Obama's camp with words from the 2008 campaign. "Remember last time around when Obama said people in states like Pennsylvania cling to their guns and their religion?" Ryan told the crowd of several thousand. "Well, as a Catholic deer hunter consider me guilty as charged. That's what freedom really is." Ryan told the Republican faithful that the Obama adminstration is out of touch, that Obama doesn't understand the needs of the American people. “Government is important to a society,” Ryan said.  “But …

Romney Campaign Opens "Victory Office" in Bucks

With just over three months until the election, GOP "Super Saturday" aimed to energize grassroots support in Bucks County.

Doylestown Borough Republican committeeman Joe Flood was prepared to spend several hours Saturday knocking on doors with one goal in mind. “We’ve lost a sense of optimism in this country,” he said. “I want to get it back.” Flood was among 50 or so stalwart Republicans who braved oppressive heat and humidity Saturday morning to mark the opening of a “Victory Office” on Broad Street in Doylestown. It was one of dozens of events nationally organized by the GOP to fire up the troops in advance of the November 6 election.  “Why are we here?” county GOP chair Pat Poprik asked the sweltering crowd to get things started. “To take back our country,” they shouted in unison.  Part pep rally and part training session, the event featured remarks by …

Who Should Get Our GOP Presidential Nod?

Forget about who WILL win, which GOP presidential hopeful SHOULD win the Pennsylvania primary?

The GOP presidential primary race seems to have been going on forever, but it's finally nearing its conclusion. Pennsylvania voters finally get their say on April 24. There's no shortage of polls out there. Gallup has plenty of information, including projecting head-to-head races with President Obama, and USA Today, which has a cool graphic that lets you see the nationwide picture as well as individual states. But that's all about who might win. We think the bigger question is, who should win. So cast a ballot in our poll and, more importantly, leave a comment to tell us who Pennsylvanians should support in the GOP primary. We'll close our poll April 23 at midnight. Oh, and if you need information about the election, check out Pennsylvania…
