The national average for a gallon of gas has dropped 9 cents to begin March, which is opposite of what motorists are used to, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report. The price increased by 6 cents last year at this time and by 17 cents in 2011. In Bucks and Montgomery Counties, gas prices dropped 3.5 cents a gallon to an average of $3.709, the second week in a row to see that decline. It is too soon to say whether retail prices have peaked for the spring, because there is still refinery maintenance to be completed, and much of the country must still transition to summer-blend gasoline, the report states. The national average for a gallon of gas has increased for 34 consecutive days, rising 47 cents or more than 14 percent during this stretch, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report. This is the longest streak since the price increased 44 cents over 44 days March 22-May 5, 2011. Locally, the average price for a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Bucks and Montgomery is $3.777, up 5.7 cents since last week, 31.9 cents higher than a month ago and 11.7 cents higher than a year ago. In Pennsylvania, the average price of self-serve gasoline is now $3.788 per gallon, up 5.6 cents since last week. Lower crude oil prices, and cold weather, has pushed gas prices down for the third week, with the national average per gallon down 35 cents from a month ago and the Pennsylvania price down 25 cents, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report. In the Bucks and Montgomery Counties, the average price of a gallon is $3.696 per gallon, which is 2.3 cents lower than a week ago, 23.8 cents lower than a month ago and 22.1 cents higher than a year ago. Power outages and distribution issues in the wake of Hurricane Sandy left some delivery terminals and service stations – particularly in Northern New Jersey and New York City – without electricity.
