Rugby Invitational Raises 1K for the Newtown Theatre

The Mayor's Invitational XV rugby match was held Saturday at George School. It raised money for the Newtown Theatre's digital projector fund.

About 500 people turned out for the Mayor's Invitational XV rugby match Saturday at George School. The event was a fundraiser for the Newtown Theatre. The theatre is currently working to raise $100,000 for a new digital projector system. According to organizers, more than $1,000 was raised for the theatre during the rugby event, which featured a social The Clubhouse Bar and Grill after the match. The event was organized by Mayor Dennis O'Brien, a long-time rugby aficionado and founder of The Hibernian Rugby Club.

Rugby Match and Social to Raise Money for Theatre

The Mayor's Invitational Rugby Match will be held March 16 at George School. A social will follow at The Clubhouse Bar & Grill.

Newtown Borough Mayor Dennis O'Brien has organized an invitational rugby match that will serve as a fundraiser for the Newtown Theatre. The theatre is currently working to raise $100,000 for a new digital projector system. O'Brien has partnered with Doylestown Rugby Football Club to organize the Mayor's Invitational Rugby Match, which will feature some of the area's best rugby players, according to a press release. The match will be held March 16 at 10:30 a.m. at George School; there is no fee to attend. Following the match, there will be a social at Clubhouse Bar & Grill, where the England vs. Wales rugby game will be broadcast live. George School Alum Takes His Research to Mars

Kevin Lewis, who attended George School in the 1990s, is fulfilling a career that is reaching new heights.

  Kevin Lewis, a George School alumni, is part of a team of scientists working on NASA’s latest Mars mission, the Curiosity rover. It’s safe to say that his career is reaching new heights. One of about eighteen scientists, Kevin will conduct experiments and help with the daily operational duties of the rover on the surface of Mars. Having launched successfully over Thanksgiving weekend from Cape Canaveral, the Curiosity rover began a nine-month journey as the largest and most complex rover ever sent to Mars. After last week’s landing, the rover now begins a two-year long exploration of its landing site at Gale crater in search of past or present habitable environments. “I hope to use the rover's instruments to investigate the history of …

Camp Expressions Holds Talent Show

The Camp Expressions talent show was held Friday morning at the George School.

  For more than a dozen campers, Friday morning was one of wonderful performances and applause from an auditorium full of people. Before noon, the campers at Camp Expression, which is designed for children and teens with autism, held a talent show where they showcased their various skills. The show, which was held at the George School in Middletown, was filled with everything from singing to science experiments. The goal of the camp is to develop communication and teamwork skills, said camp coordinator Deborah Hoelper. She added that transitioning into an independent life is something important the older campers learn. Over the course of the six-week program, over 100 campers participated. George School Class of 2012 Recognized for 'Generosity of Spirit'

The school's 118th commencement ceremony was held Sunday. The class of 2012 had 136 graduates.

  Despite heavy rains and a delayed start, the 136 members of George School’s class of 2012 had high spirits Sunday as the 118th commencement ceremony was held. Family, friends and community members joined the members of the class of 2012 for a ceremony that highlighted their generosity of spirit and sense of community. Traditionally held outdoors, the ceremony was delayed by about an hour as parents of graduates joined George School staff members in preparing the sports center to host the ceremony, which needed to be relocated due to heavy rain and thunder, school officials said. George School Hosting 7th Annual Art for Relief Event

The event will be held this Saturday and benefits Philabundance.

  George School's seventh annual Art for Relief, a student-organized night of art to raise money for relief efforts, will be held at the school this Saturday starting at 6 p.m.  Admission is free and open to the public; donations are encouraged. The evening will begin with an art show and silent auction in the meetinghouse and conclude with a performance at 7:30 p.m. in Walton Center Auditorium. “Art for Relief at George School is committed to promoting the idea of local service and connection to the wider community,” said Bryan Silverman, one of the student organizers. “This principle has factored into our decision to once again select a local charity.” All proceeds from this year's event will go to Philabundance, which serves low-income …

Newtown Resident Celebrates 100th Birthday

Nancy Mullen celebrated this week with students at the George School Children's Center.

  Nancy Mullen, a former Radio City Rockette, celebrated her 100th birthday this week with students at the George School Children’s Center.  Mullen is a Newtown resident who lives with her youngest daughter, a George School Children’s Center teacher. During the celebration, the students and teachers sang songs and counted to 100 before Mullen blew out the candles on her birthday cupcakes.  The students made several presents and presented them to Mullen with their book of birthday wishes and art. Mullen, born on March 22, 1912, became a Rockette at the age of 19. She was a line dancer for four years and then captain of the line for eight years.

"The Importance of Being Earnest" Opens Tonight At George School

The performances by George School theater and stagecraft students are free and open to the public.

  George School theatre students will present Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest,” tonight and Saturday at 8 p.m. The performances by George School theater and stagecraft students are free and open to the public. The Importance of Being Earnest was first performed in 1895 and has been defined as a “Comedy of Manners.”  The play, set in London in 1895, is a satire of the English aristocracy and their affectations and mannerisms. According to theater teacher Maureen West, the play’s comedic appeal hits close to home for all audiences. “These characters are so self-inflated that it is hilarious,” Maureen said. “(Oscar) Wilde is trying to make fun of all of us because we all do that at one time or another.” The Importance of Being …

The Miracle League hosted its three day softball tournament on George School's Campus. In addition to softball, kids play various games.
